Mayor Gray Recalls Assassination of President John F. Kennedy

Marks 50th Anniversary with Proclamation and District Flags at Half-Staff

Last Friday, Mayor Gray marked the 50th anniversary of the November 22, 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy with a proclamation and an order – in compliance with a similar order from+ President Obama – for District flags to fly at half-staff alongside the national flag. “I remember well where I was 50 years ago when we received the heartbreaking news that President Kennedy had been killed in Dallas,” Mayor Gray said. “I was a 21-year-old student at The George Washington University, and the campus was overcome with emotion for those of us who saw in President Kennedy a bright, shining hope for generational change and progress on issues ranging from civil rights to the Cold War to the war on poverty. Today, we reflect not only on the great loss of potential with President Kennedy’s death, but also on the great progress he made during his far-too-brief time in office.”
