News from Muriel
October 9, 2013
Dear
Neighbors:
It’s Day 9. It’s an absolute disgrace that our national
leaders can’t come to an agreement for the sake of our country and especially
the residents of the District of Columbia.
Although as city leaders, we have taken a firm stance to continue
providing vital services to all residents, our hard earned budget is held hostage
by the inaction of our federal government.
Our city demands and deserves respect and the budget autonomy that is
afforded to everyone else.
I will be hosting
two upcoming meetings and an information session in the next two weeks. On
October 12th, I will host a Public Safety Meeting with MPD Assistant
Chief Groomes and Fourth District Commander Missouri to discuss what measures
MPD is taking in response to the uptick in activity in our neighborhood. On October 15th, I will host a
community meeting with officials from DC Water and DDOT to discuss projects in
the Colonial Village community and the Kalmia Culvert/Bridge,
respectively. I will also host an
Affordable Care Act information session with the Greater Washington Chamber of
Hispanic Commerce and the DC Health Link. For more information, please read the
details of the events in my newsletter.
In response to
the uptick in activity in the Ward 4 neighborhoods, Councilmember Muriel Bowser
will host a Public Safety Meeting on Saturday, October 12th from
10:00AM – 12:00PM at the Fourth District Police Station located at 6000 Georgia
Avenue, NW. Metropolitan Police
Department (MPD) Assistant Police Chief Diane Groomes and Fourth District
Commander Kimberly Missouri will be on hand to discuss the measures the MPD is
taking to address neighborhood concerns.
For more
information, please contact Brandon Todd at 202-724-8052 or btodd@dccouncil.us.
Councilmember
Bowser will host a community meeting on Tuesday, October 15th that
will begin at 7:00PM and will be located at Shepherd Elementary School, 7800 14th
Street, NW. The meeting will include
officials from DC Water to discuss their projects in the Colonial Village
neighborhood, along with officials from the District Department of Transportation
(DDOT) to discuss the Kalmia Culvert/Bridge project.
For more
information, please contact Judi Gold at 202-724-8052 or jgold@dccouncil.us.
The Brightwood Community Association is organizing a clean-up day on Saturday,
October 12th beginning at 9:00AM.
The association will meet at the front of the Fort Stevens Recreation
Center located at 1327 Van Buren Street, NW.
They will provide supplies and snacks for any volunteers.

The DC Department of Public Works (DPW) will observe
Columbus Day, Monday, October 14th, and many services will be
suspended, including parking regulations, expired meters, residential parking
and street sweeping.
Sanitation services will also be suspended for the
holiday and will resume Tuesday, October 15th. For once-a-week trash and recycling
collection, neighborhood collections will “slide” to the next following
day. For twice-a-week collection
neighborhoods, Monday/Thursday collections will be made Tuesday and Friday, and
Tuesday/Friday collections will be made Wednesday and Saturday.
Street sweeping will be suspended Monday, October 14th,
so motorists will not need to move their cars that day.
The Fort Totten Transfer Station will be also closed
Monday, October 14 and will reopen Tuesday, October 15th to
residents to bring trash, bulk items and recyclables between 1:00PM – 5:00PM.
For more information, please contact DPW at 202-673-6833.
Councilmember Muriel Bowser, the Greater Washington Hispanic Chamber of
Commerce (GWHCC) and the DC Health Link will host the Affordable Care Act
Information Session on Friday, October 18th from 12:00PM – 2:00PM at
Fusion Restaurant located at 4815 Georgia Avenue, NW. The session will provide information about
how health care reform will impact neighbors and businesses. Lunch will be provided for attendees.
