DCOA E*News At-A-Glance
 Last
week, Mayor Vincent C. Gray visited seniors at the Paul Laurence Dunbar Apartments located at 2001 15th Street, NW. During the visit he spoke with
seniors and answered questions on public space, the District's economy, as well as retail and
transportation. The Mayor also discussed the District's recent high rankings and encouraged all to share why D.C. is a great place to live.

Seniors
in several of the District's wellness centers will benefit from new computers
thanks to a collaborative effort between DCOA and Connect.DC, the
D.C. Office of the Chief Technology Officer's (OCTO)
Digital Inclusion Initiative. Four computers were distributed to
each of the sites including Congress Heights, Hattie Holmes, Model
Cities and Washington Seniors Wellness Centers. The new all-in-one computers minimize desktop space and feature 20-inch display
monitors.
The
new computers were funded through the D.C. Broadband Education, Training
and Adoption (DC-BETA) grant. The DC-BETA grant provides digital literacy
and workforce skills training, refurbished computers, and subsidized broadband
access through resource centers located in underserved wards, specifically
Wards 5, 7 and 8. For more details about the grant click

According to a recently released report entitled The AARP Workforce, the following information was provided about older workers.

Of those 65 years and older still in the labor force,
- 51 percent traveled to work by car,
truck or van;

The report provides

According to the Census,
there are currently at least 650,000 families headed by same-sex couples.
Nearly half of them are near retirement age or have children who
should be protected by Social Security in the event of either parent’s death or
disability. With the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA)
gone, same sex spouses and their children will be eligible for important
spousal and survivor benefits based on
their marriage or legal relationship.
