DCOA E*News At-A-Glance
Last week, Mayor Vincent C. Gray visited seniors at the Bernice Fonteneau Senior Wellness Center, located at 3531 Georgia Avenue, NW. While speaking to seniors who were eating lunch, Mayor Gray left to go to the scene of a fire around the corner. As the D.C. Fire and EMS personnel were responding to the fire, the Mayor, Executive Director John M. Thompson and DCOA staff immediately stepped in to assist the senior citizen on the scene. Calls were made to begin the process of connecting the resident to resources that would assist. The Mayor also talked with neighbors and personnel on the scene thanking them for their diligence and providing reassurance to neighbors.
After the resident was transported to the hospital, Mayor Gray returned to the wellness center and DCOA social workers were deployed to follow-up on the case.

Seniors at SOME Senior Center recently celebrated an afternoon of tea and poetry. Participants shared their poetry with staff as judges and the winning entry was submitted by Florence Canada. The poem, "Who Are They," speaks of the activities seniors participate in at SOME and reflects on their friendships and their health. The Office on Aging has reissued an Request for Applications (RFA) seeking applications from qualified
applicants to plan, develop, organize, implement and sustain “Aging in
Place” programs for wards 7 & 8 in the District. The programs
should enable District residents age 60
years and older residing in a specific neighborhood to enjoy safer,
healthier and more independent lives in their own homes. Senior villages
assist seniors living in neighborhoods by partnering with and
connecting them to needed resources and service providers. As a
nonprofit, membership organization, the village can provide a variety of
programs and services more cost-effectively than most conventional
retirement communities are able to provide. The RFA deadline for submission is July 19, 2013 at 4:30 pm. To view the RFA and for more information, visit dcoa.dc.gov or opgd.dc.gov.
