On June 6, 2013, DC DMV implemented emergency rulemaking to waive the requirement that an applicant take a written or road test in the following circumstances:
1. The written examination may be waived if the applicant presents a District driver license that has expired for three hundred sixty five (365) days or less, or at any time successfully completes an online driver course as designated by the Department of Motor Vehicles; and
2. The road test, including the motorcycle road test in the case of a motorcycle endorsement holder, may be waived if the applicant presents a District driver license that has expired for five hundred and forty-five (545) days or less.
Prior to the emergency rulemaking, the law required a written test after a license was expired for 90 days and the road test would be required for any license expired past 180 days. By extending the period after the expiration of the license, many individuals who failed to renew their license timely, were removed from the appointment line, thereby, opening slots for others to schedule a road test appointment.
And the winner is . . . DC Department of Motor Vehicles. Yes, DC DMV has won three Public Affairs and Consumer Education Awards (PACE) from the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA). The agency took top honors in Region I for: Best Photo Taken By an Employee; Website - Externally Produced, and Print or Electronic Newsletter, External. DC DMV Director Lucinda Babers extends kudos to her staff and will accept the awards during AAMVA's Region I Conference in July.
New to DC DMV's newsletter is Ticket Tips. This section has specifically been created to provide you with ticket adjudication tips. While DC DMV adjudicates tickets, it does not issue them. To help ensure this section is helpful to you, please give us your feedback through Twitter, Facebook, or email dmv@dc.gov.
So, you've paid for metered parking and return to your car only to find a ticket tucked underneath the windshield wiper that says your time expired.
Tip: When submitting your request for adjudication online, through the mail, or via a walk-in hearing, make sure DC DMV receives the printed out receipt that you placed in the window, or the ParkMobile Detailed Sessions receipt that shows critical information including:
1. Start Date/Time
2. End Date/Time
3. Zone
4. Location
5. Vehicle Tag
This detailed receipt will allow a hearing examiner to review evidence that contains critical information to see if the ticket should be dismissed. Remember to always submit detailed documentation; the hearing examiner does not leave the bench to obtain or verify evidence on your behalf.
