Reminder: Utility Bill Assistance
DC Water and Sewer Authority has two programs which are
available to help people pay their bills.
For both programs, income limits apply and you need to
have the bill in your name. If the bill is in your landlord’s name, he or
she can tell DC Water to send a copy of the bill in your name so you can
receive assistance.
DC Water’s Customer Assistance Program (CAP) provides a
discount up to $33.04 a month. Apply for
or renew your discount at the DC Department of the Environment
(DDOE). DDOE also processes utility discounts for Pepco, Washington
Gas and Verizon. If you qualify for all four discounts, you could save up
to $100-$200 monthly on your utility bills. For more information contact
DDOE at 311, or DC Water at (202)354-2600, or visit www.ddoe.dc.gov/upp.
The second program, called SPLASH, is one-time assistance
for those who have a past due water bill. The SPLASH program is
administered by the Greater Washington Urban League. If funding is
available, you may get up to $350 per year to help pay your bill or to get your
service re-connected. The funds are limited so typically they
cannot help more than 25 customers per month. For further information
contact 202 265-8200, or visit http://www.gwul.org/programs/assistance/water/.
