Memorial Day Holiday Update

Dear Friends,

As we prepare plans for the long Memorial Day Holiday weekend, let us include in our celebrations reflection, dedication and reverence honoring District residents that served in the United States Armed Forces and sacrificed their lives to protect our freedoms at home and abroad. During this time of war and conflicts around the world, we pay tribute to the fallen men and women who served our great nation, the United States of America. Also, let us not forget to give thanks and tribute to those who suffered injuries from the pain of war and conflicts on behalf of our nation.

While we embrace the nationalism and American spirit of Memorial Day, it is important to remember the injustice residents of the District of Columbia continue to endure because of the lack of equal representation in the United States Congress and Statehood for the District. Our sons and daughters have given their lives in the line of duty, yet we as residents lack equal treatment as afforded the residents of the 50 states. However, let us continue our quest for greater self-determination and Statehood. Currently there are individual bills in Congress to grant Statehood to both Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. Perhaps this will be an opportunity for the two jurisdictions to work together and succeed in becoming new states. I will do all I can to reach out to my friends in Puerto Rico, across the nation, and in Congress for Statehood. I encourage you to do so, as well.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND EVENTS

National Memorial Day Concert

Sunday, May 26, 2013, 8 p.m. Gates open at 5 p.m.
PBS sponsors a FREE concert on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. The concert features actors Joe Mantegna and Gary Sinise, and other guest artists along with the National Symphony Orchestra.

National Memorial Day Parade with Grand Marshall Robert Griffin III

Monday, May 27, 2013, beginning at 2 p.m.
The parade of Marching Bands and Veterans units from all 50 states steps off at the corner of Constitution Avenue and 7th Streets, NW and proceeds along Constitution Avenue, past the White House, ending at 17th Street. The National Memorial Day Parade is sponsored by the World War II Veterans Committee and includes patriotic floats and helium-filled balloons.

Rolling Thunder Motorcycle Rally

Sunday, May 26, 2013. Departure from the Pentagon at 12 p.m. Speaker Program and Musical Tribute 1:30 p.m. at the Reflecting Pool across from The Lincoln Memorial. Thousands of motorcycles ride through Washington in an annual demonstration seeking to improve veteran benefits and resolve POW/MIA issues.

The Buffalo Thunder Memorial Motorcycle Ride

Sunday, May 26, 2013, 10 a.m. The Buffalo Thunder Memorial Motorcycle Ride will begin in the Sears parking lot at 2101 Brightseat Rd in Hyattsville, MD and end at the African American Civil War Memorial and Museum at 1925 Vermont Ave NW in Washington, DC.

Arlington National Cemetery

Flags-In. Soldiers from the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) will be joined by service members from the U.S. Marine Corps Ceremonial and Guard Company, U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guard, U.S. Air Force Honor Guard and the U.S. Coast Guard Ceremonial Honor Guard in placing more than 250,000 grave decorating flags at Arlington National Cemetery. The flags will remain through Memorial Day.

Monday, May 27, 2013, 11 a.m. A wreath-laying ceremony and concert will be held at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in honor of Memorial Day.

Monday, May 27, 2013, 4 p.m. The Women In Military Service For America Memorial, located at the gateway to Arlington National Cemetery, will hold a ceremony that includes formal military honors, a keynote address, wreath-laying, and the Memorial’s signature event, the scattering of rose petals in tribute to departed comrades. Members of the public are invited to join in the personal tribute segment of the program.

Navy Memorial

Saturday, May 25, 2013, 11 a.m. Rolling Thunder visits the Navy Memorial and holds a wreath-laying ceremony featuring special guests and live performances.

Monday, May 27, 2013, 10 a.m. Fleet Reserve Association Wreath laying, 12 p.m. U.S. Navy Band Concert, 1 p.m. Naval District Washington Wreath laying.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial

Monday, May 27, 2013, 1 p.m. Thousands of veterans and their families congregate at The Wall to remember and to honor the U.S. armed forces. The wreath-laying ceremony is open to the public.

World War II Memorial

Monday, May 27, 2013, 9 a.m. The National Park Service and the Friends of the National World War II Memorial will sponsor a wreath-laying ceremony in honor of our veterans. Guest speakers will give remarks. The theme for the commemoration is "Honoring our Fallen Warriors." Many surviving WWII veterans will be in attendance.

Air Force Memorial

Monday, May 27, 2013, 9 a.m. wreath laying ceremony is open to the public. Activities include the national anthem, invocation, speeches, the laying of the wreath and the sounding of Taps.

President Lincoln's Cottage

Monday, May 27, 2013. Take a free guided tour of the USSAH National Cemetery (predecessor of Arlington National Cemetery) at 10:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. A wreath laying ceremony will also take place at the Soldiers' Home at 10 a.m. Tours of the Cottage will be available from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the regular price of $15 for adults and $5 for children. Visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch. Advanced reservations for Cottage Tours are strongly recommended.

Memorial Day Flyover

Monday, May 27, 2013. In honor of Memorial Day there will be a ceremonial flyover in the area of the Vietnam Memorial. This is expected to present low flying aircrafts starting at approximately 2:50 p.m.

DPW OBSERVES MEMORIAL DAY

Sanitation services and parking enforcement will be suspended. However, parking regulations will be enforced in the Nationals Stadium neighborhood. All services resume Tuesday, May 28.

Trash and recycling collections and street and alley cleaning will be suspended. Parking enforcement will be suspended, except in the Nationals Stadium neighborhood. All services will resume Tuesday, May 28.

Trash/recycling collections: Trash and recycling collections in once-a-week collection neighborhoods will “slide” to the next day for the remainder of the week. In neighborhoods with twice-weekly trash collections, Monday and Thursday collections will be made Tuesday and Friday, and Tuesday and Friday collections will be made Wednesday and Saturday.

Parking Enforcement: Parking regulations will be enforced in the Nationals Stadium Neighborhood. Elsewhere, DPW will suspend enforcement of expired meters, residential parking and rush hour lane restrictions. Also, booting, towing and abandoned vehicle removal will be suspended. Enforcement resumes Tuesday, May 28.

Ft. Totten: The Ft. Totten Transfer Station, located at 4900 John F. McCormack Drive, NE, will be closed. Residents may resume bringing bulk trash and recyclables on Tuesday, May 28, between 1 pm and 5 pm.

The next Saturday household hazardous waste/e-cycling/document shredding drop-off day is June 1, 8 am to 3 pm, (these services are available the first Saturday of the month, except holidays). To accommodate residents whose religious beliefs prohibit them from using the Saturday drop-off, DPW will accept only household hazardous waste and e-cyclables the Thursday before the first Saturday of the month (May 30, from 1 pm to 5 pm). DPW will not accept personal documents for shredding on Thursdays as there is no way to secure these items until the contractor arrives on Saturday.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND ROAD CLOSURES

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has provided the following information about scheduled street closures for multiple events that are scheduled to be held from Saturday, May 25, 2013 to Monday, May 27, 2013.

To facilitate these events there will be no vehicular traffic allowed along the routes. Motorists should expect delays during these events. Individuals who have issues to be resolved or questions regarding traffic access during these events should call 202-727-9099.

National Memorial Day Parade - On Monday, May 27, 2013, the National Memorial Day Parade will take place from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. The streets along the following route will be closed from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Starting from 7th Street, NW and Constitution Avenue, NW ending at 23rd Street and Constitution Avenue, NW
Also closed: 7th Street, NW from Constitution Avenue to Independence Avenue, SW

All street closures and listed times are subject to change based upon prevailing or unexpected conditions.

Motorists could encounter possible delays if operating in the vicinity of these events and may wish to consider alternative routes. MPD and the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) also wish to remind motorists in the vicinity of these events to proceed with caution as increased pedestrian traffic can be anticipated.

DDOT TO LIFT REVERSIBLE LANE RESTRICTIONS FOR MEMORIAL DAY

During Holiday Parking Regulations Will Only be Enforced in the Nationals Stadium Neighborhood

(Washington, D.C.) The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) announced it will lift the District’s reversible lane restrictions during the Memorial Day holiday on Monday, May 27.

In addition, DDOT will open travel lanes temporarily closed for construction or maintenance work beginning at 12 p.m. on Friday, May 24, through 12 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28. Construction zones with concrete barriers and orange barrels will remain in place.

Standard weekday reversible lane restrictions and parking enforcement will resume on Tuesday, May 28.

STREET CLOSURES FOR SUNDAY NATIONAL MEMORIAL DAY CONCERT

The following information about scheduled street closures for the National Memorial Day Concert on Sunday, May 26, 2013 has been provided by the U.S. Capitol Police. This concert, which is scheduled to be held on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol, is an annual event honoring American veterans and current members of the U.S. Armed Services.

Temporary street closures will begin on Friday, May 24, 2013 at 1 a.m. through Monday, May 27, 2013 at 4 a.m. at the following locations:

First Street between Independence Avenue SW and Constitution Avenue NW.
Pennsylvania Avenue, NW between First Street NW and Third Street NW.
Maryland Avenue between First Street SW and Third Street SW.
First Street between Garfield Circle and Peace Circle will remain closed through Monday, May 27, 2013 at 7 p.m.

Parking in the immediate area of the U.S. Capitol is extremely limited. Please visit www.wmata.com to help plan your trip using public transportation.

METRO SERVICE INFORMATION FOR MEMORIAL DAY 2013

Metrorail and Metrobus will operate on Sunday schedules

Metrorail: The system will open at 7 a.m. and close at midnight. Trains will operate on a Sunday schedule. Passengers are advised of scheduled rebuilding work on the Red and Orange lines. Off-peak fares will be in effect all day, and parking will be free at all Metrorail parking facilities.
Metrobus: Buses will operate on a Sunday schedule. Check bus timetables for details.
MetroAccess: All subscription trips will be cancelled on Monday. Customers wishing to travel on the holiday should make a separate reservation.

In addition, Metro's customer information line, lost and found and customer relations call centers will be closed on the holiday.

DPR ANNOUNCES MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND SCHEDULE

DPR Central Office, Recreation & Community Centers To Close on Memorial Day, DPR's Outdoor Pools Open

WASHINGTON, DC – The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) will open DPR's 19 outdoor swimming pools, 4 children's pools and 11 spray parks for the 2013 summer season starting on Saturday, May 25 at 12 pm. The District’s outdoor aquatic facilities will remain open the entire Memorial Day weekend - Saturday, Sunday and Monday - from 12 pm until 6 pm. District residents (must show accepted proof of residency) swim free of charge at all DPR pools, non-District residents must pay a fee.

DPR central office, indoor pools, recreation and community centers will be closed on Monday, May 27 for the Memorial Day holiday with the exception of Wilson Aquatic Center, which be open on Monday, May 27 from 9 am to 5 pm. All other indoor aquatic facilities will be closed on Monday, May 27. All permitted events will take place as scheduled and all fields will be open.

After the Memorial Day Weekend, outdoor pools will be open on weekends only (Saturday and Sunday), from 12 pm until 6 pm, until Monday, June 24. After Monday, June 24, all outdoor pools will operate on an individualized summer schedule. All outdoor pools are open six days a week and closed one day per week for cleaning and maintenance.
