Mission:

The mission of the Mayor’s Office on African Affairs (OAA) is to ensure that the full range of health, education, employment, social services, safety, business and economic development information, services and opportunities are accessible to the District’s African immigrant communities. 

By serving as the liaison between the District’s African immigrant communities, District government agencies and the Mayor, OAA aims to:  Improve the quality of life of the District’s diverse African born constituencies and their children; Increase civic and public engagement in the District’s African immigrant communities; and Support community development.

The Landmark Development Initiative (LDI) Africa and Atlas Corps Fellows co-sponsored an event on Monday, March 25th, which featured a panel discussion including guest speakers,  Taha Sharif, LDI Founder Gbenga Ogunjimi, and the Director of the DC Mayor’s Office on African Affairs, Ngozi Nmezi. Sherif Elhassan was born in Sudan and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Khartoum, Sudan. Through his experiences, Sherif developed strong capacity building, project management and leadership skills. He enjoys focusing on the topics of Public and Reproductive Health, and has an interest for youth, whichis why he wanted to be a part of the DC Mayor’s Office on African Affairs.

Mercy Erhiawarien is a proud native of Nigeria. She completed her Master's in Public Policy from the University of Cape Town and is passionate about serving the African continent and its people.  Her interests are in the areas of education, nutrition, and capacity building.  She is eager to contribute to the work of the OAA and support the welfare and development of the African Diaspora in Washington, DC.

African Wellness Fete

The Mayor’s Office on African Affairs (OAA) is pleased to invite you to participate in Think.Eat.Act.Move Africa’s African Wellness Fete on June 1, 2013.  The Fete is a culmination of the OAA’s TEAM Africa initiative, an outreach and education program focusing on the health and wellness of the District’s African communities.  TEAM Africa provides the District’s African residents with culturally relevant education on health and wellness issues through a social media awareness campaign, health workshops, and mobile testing and resources fairs.

The District of Columbia Department of Transportation (DDOT) invites interested non-profit organizations to apply for their 2013 Transportation for Elderly Persons and Persons with Disabilities (Section 5310 Program).  The program provides financial assistance to non-for profit organizations that include local or neighborhood based nonprofit organizations and religious or charitable organizations for the purchasing of vehicles and wheelchair equipment that can help them meet the transportation needs of elderly persons and persons with disabilities when transportation service is unavailable to meet these needs.  Grant applications are due Friday, May 10th.
