On Sunday, February 17th, AIESEC DC held their third annual Global Village at The George Washington University. The purpose of the event was to engage the campus in learning about global cultures as well as to introduce them to internship opportunities. The Office on African Affairs was one of the exibitors representing the Mayor's Office and the African community. All who passed by were given the opportunity to join the OAA list serve, find out about upcoming OAA events, and get to know DC's ethnically and lingustically diverse African community
Mayor Gray Releases Sustainable DC Plan
Mayor Gray announced the release of the Sustainable DC Plan to ensure the District is the healthiest, greenest, and most livable city in the nation. The Mayor released the plan during an event at the Earth Conservation Corps Pump House at Diamond Teague Park on the Anacostia River. There, he was joined by more than 100 people, including members of his Green Cabinet and Green Ribbon Committee, in support of the effort.

Mayor G Mayor Gray and Google Announce Free Websites for D.C. Small Business
With several hundred businesses in attendance, Google launched its Washington, D.C. Get Your Business Online on February 12th at the Woolly Mammoth Theatre. Google worked with local partners, including the District’s Department of Small and Local Business Development to design the program, which will help drive economic growth by giving District businesses the tools and resources to establish a website, find new customers, and grow their business.

Many Americans are familiar with the stories stories about work-seeking immigrants who crossed our southern border and are compelled to live and toil in the shadows of opportunity. Often overlooked or ignored, however, are the estimated 3 million black immigrants whose daily plight in the United States is no less dramatic or demanding of public attention. While the vast majority of black immigrants are legal residents concentrated in large cities such as New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Miami, an estimated 400,000 of them lack documents that would allow them to live openly.

D.C. Children in Shelter Must Get Real Homes
The Department of Human Services has been in the news a lot lately with specific regard to the children who live at the DC General Family Shelter. One of the reoccurring themes of these articles is that DHS is attempting to find other alternatives for families before placing them in shelter. This is correct. A shelter, even a well run one, is not a place to raise a family. It’s not good enough for our families; it should not be considered good enough for any family.
