Mayor's Annual Holiday Celebration

Seniors Celebrate the Holidays at the D.C. Armory

Nearly 3200 seniors celebrated the holidays at the D.C. Armory for the Mayor's 15th Annual Senior Holiday Celebration. Mayor Vincent C. Gray greeted those in attendance as well as Ward 5 Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie.  The event provided information and senior resource exhibits, health and safety exhibits, free health screenings and immunizations, counseling and facials and manicures. "Captain Fly" from WPFW 89.3 FM and WYCB Spirit 1340 AM served as the Master of Ceremonies for the stage show which included live music featuring former lead singer for the Spinners Frank Washington, HALO Band and various senior acts.  The event was presented by the D.C. Office on Aging and Family Matters of Greater Washington. Community partner AARP supported the event and volunteers from the armed forces, local schools, PEPCO and various community organizations assisted the seniors throughout the day.

The National Association of Area Agencies on Aging Chief Executive Visits Senior Wellness Center

Sandy Markwood, chief executive officer of the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging, visited the Hayes Senior Wellness Center to speak with seniors about financial exploitation.  Financial exploitation is commonly committed by someone that the victim knows and trusts such as a family member or close friend.  According to experts, financial exploitation cost seniors an estimated $3 billion annually; consequently, the loss of money adversely impacts seniors’ health, safety, dignity, and independence.

Ms. Markwood also shared a copy of Protect Your Pocketbook: Tips to Avoid Financial Exploitation, a  consumer guide with the seniors.  You can download this consumer guide by visiting this website: http://n4a.org/pdf/n4a_Financial_Exploitation_Brochure_for_508.pdf.

D.C. Homeowners Eligible for a Foreclosure Settlement Must File Claims by January 18

The Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking reminds local borrowers who lost their homes to foreclosure between 2008 and 2011 that they may be eligible for restitution and must file claims by January 18.

Eligible homeowners had mortgages serviced by the five largest mortgage-servicers: Ally/GMAC, Bank of America, Citi, JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo. The servicers agreed to a $25 billion settlement with the federal government and the attorneys general of 49 states and the District over foreclosure abuses such as “robo-signing” or not processing foreclosures thoroughly and carefully. The authorities earmarked $1.5 billion to partially repay 2 million dollars to homeowners.  For more information, visit www.disb.dc.gov or call 202-727-8000.
