OAA FrontPage:
Please join Mayor Vincent C. Gray and his Office on African Affairs in ushering in an important month, September, which has for the first time in the District of Columbia been proclaimed by Mayor Vincent C. Gray as “AFRICAN HERITAGE MONTH”.
It is with great pride and pleasure that the Mayor’s Office on African Affairs announces a month-long celebration of the long legacy and presence of African contributions to the character and identity of this city and nation. The District of Columbia joins several other jurisdictions in the country that have officially proclaimed September as African Heritage Month.
Rescheduled due to weather conditions, the 3rd Annual DC Africa Festival will now be held on Saturday, September 29th at the Banneker Recreation Center, and serve as the celebratory culmination of the festivities and events that will be held throughout this month to highlight contributions, accomplishments and key issues that define the African immigrant experience locally and nationally.
In partnership with the Mayor's Commission on African Affairs, OAA is hosting an information session on Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals and the Mayor's stance on Secure Communities which will be held on Tuesday, September 25th, from 6pm to 8:30pm at the Reeves Municipal Building (see details below).
We also invite you to celebrate African Heritage Month through the arts by attending the highly anticipated premiere of Doctor Bello, the unprecedented, cross-cultural film starring Isaiah Washington, Vivica A. Fox, Jimmy Jean-Louis, Genevieve Nnaji, Stephanie Okereke, Bern Cohen and a host of Hollywood and Nollywood actors. The premiere will be held on Thursday September 27th, 2012, at 7pm, at the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts located on 2700 F Street, NW, Washington DC. Preceding the premiere on Wednesday September 26th from 1pm-3pm, a Q&A symposium will be held at Howard University Blackburn Building Gallery.
We hope that you will celebrate African Heritage Month with us by participating in these events, and by attending other events throughout the District that are being organized to showcase the growing presence and vitality of the District's African community!

What's New With Your Mayor?
District Unemployment Rate Continues To
Drop
Mayor Gray Welcomes Drop to 8.8 Percent
(WASHINGTON,
D.C.) – Mayor Vincent
C. Gray today welcomed news that the District of Columbia’s unemployment rate
continued to decline, as preliminary August job estimates show a decrease of
0.1 percent to 8.8 percent. The number of unemployed District residents dropped
by 500 from 31,700 in July to 31,200 in August. The August numbers mark
six straight months of unemployment decline in the District.
“While
it’s gratifying to see a continued drop, our employment situation is complex
and we must not give in to complacency,” noted Mayor Gray. “We must continue
working diligently to grow and diversify our economy. To back off now would be
foolhardy, especially given the very real possibly of devastating federal
budget cuts on the horizon.”
Mayor Gray Urges Council
to Pass Bill to Strengthen City’s Tech Sector and
Grow and Diversify the District’s Economy
Mayor Gray
urged the D.C. Council to pass the Technology Sector Enhancement Act of 2012,
which will help continue to diversify and grow the New Economy the Mayor has
envisioned for the District by incentivizing investment in D.C.’s growing
technology sector.
Mayor Gray made
the announcement at The Fort, the downtown headquarters of tech-company
accelerator Fortify.vc, alongside other public
and private sector leaders, including Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic
Development Victor L. Hoskins, Startup DC Chair Evan Burfield, D.C. Chamber of
Commerce President & CEO Barbara Lang and Fortify.vc Founding Partner Jonathon
Perrelli.
Reacting to
OMB’s Sequestration Report, Mayor Gray Urges Congress to Avoid Massive,
Job-Killing Cuts
Mayor Gray issued the below statement
in reaction to the Office of Management and Budget’s release of its
sequestration report – a description of how the sequestration to which Congress
agreed under last year’s Budget Control Act would take place if legislators do
not avoid it by finding a solution before the Jan. 1, 2013 deadline:
“The sequestration report makes one
thing clear: The District’s economy will suffer significantly if Congress does
not find a solution to prevent sequestration from taking effect. The District
of Columbia and our entire region, for better or for worse, depend to a
significant degree on federal spending. These cuts would likely mean the loss
of thousands of public and private-sector jobs in our area and a corresponding
significant decrease in revenues for local governments, including the
District’s.”

Out of Africa, Into the Home
With Tribal-Inspired Looks, Designers Are Decorating to the Beat of a Different Drum
In 2009, Patrizia Moroso, creative director of Italian furniture maker Moroso, and American designer Stephen Burks mounted "M'Afrique" in Milan. Uniting artists, photographers and designers under one roof during the Salone Internazionale del Mobile, the Africa-inspired show was meant to help shift perceptions about Africa. It ended up being a harbinger of trends to come. The present craze for all things tribal can, in part, be linked back to that presentation.

Business forum: Local African Businesses Hit Milestone
The African Development Center has for the first time honored African-owned businesses for outstanding success as a way of recognizing this growing segment of Minnesota's business community.
That these businesses were honored at all is an indication of how far they, and the African community in Minnesota, have come in a single generation. Studies show that increasing the rates of self-employment and homeownership among these "new Minnesotans" contributes to the revitalization of neglected neighborhoods and links mainstream businesses with the state's estimated $6 billion ethnic economy.
Schools notebook: Candidate forum puts focus on East African community
The concerns of the local East African community were front-and-center during the first post-primary School Board candidate forum, held Sept. 6 at Brian Coyle Center in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood.
The event hosted by the New Americans Political Action Committee, a group that advocates for Minnesota’s East African immigrants, was lightly attended, with only about 25 people watching the six candidates who will appear on the Election Day ballot, plus one write-in candidate invited to join in the discussion.

Girls today are faced with a myriad of challenges. A never ending stream of media and advertising imagery dictates how girls should look and act. Instead of a period of innocence, their girlhood is fraught with confusing, conflicting, and unhealthy messages about sexuality, power, and consumption. Girls may not know how to ask for help if they need it and often don’t feel in control of the choices they make. Teaching girls to negotiate equips them with a skill to make better decisions, improve their relationships, reduce conflict, and take more control over their lives.
