Community Forum on Mental Health & Suicides

We have some great speakers, but the audience feedback is going to be very valuable. And so you are cordially invited to attend and participate in any way you can. It is important for us to never discount the value of others in our community.
Objective: First and foremost to raise awareness that their is a problem in our community. Not just in our immediate area, but in neighboring states and other countries. The second is to open the channel of communication so that those people in our community who are trained to provide support to community members are visible. The third objective is for friends and family to learn and develop a keen eye so that they do not overlook tell tale signs. The fourth is to foster and implement additional support systems based on community feedback, be it a hotline with Amharic speakers, etc.

Important Information About Vacant/Blighted Buildings and Property Tax Bills

DCRA’s Vacant Building Enforcement unit will work with any affected property owners to address any concerns about inaccurate classification of the property as vacant or blighted. We should note that during the period immediately following the issuance of new tax bills, we experience much heavier customer volume and our response times are slower than normal as a result.  But we are committed to working to resolve any errors and explaining the process to our customers.

COMMON CAUSES FOR BUILDINGS BEING CLASSIFIED AS VACANT:
  • The building was recently inspected following a complaint and determined to be vacant, but there was no response from the owner to our notifications.
  • The building was recently purchased, but was classified as vacant or blighted last year.
  • The owner very recently filed paperwork with DCRA for an occupied or exempt status and it has not yet been recorded with the Office of Tax and Revenue.
  • The property was recently in foreclosure proceedings and was registered as vacant by a mortgage company.

Additional information can be found here.

Calling All Girls! Learn How to Get What You Want (PROGRESS - PROGRAM FOR RESEARCH AND OUTREACH ON GENDER EQUITY IN SOCIETY)

Girls today are faced with a myriad of challenges. A never ending stream of media and advertising imagery dictates how girls should look and act. Instead of a period of innocence, their girlhood is fraught with confusing, conflicting, and unhealthy messages about sexuality, power, and consumption. Girls may not know how to ask for help if they need it and often don’t feel in control of the choices they make. Teaching girls to negotiate equips them with a skill to make better decisions, improve their relationships, reduce conflict, and take more control over their lives.

Girls ages 7-12, join us for fun, food and entertainment!
• Keynote Speaker Molly Barker
- Founder and Vision Keeper of Girls on the Run International
• Performances by the Georgetown University Step Team
• Games, Activities and Much More!
Participants Learn To
• Build confidence as effective negotiators
• Recognize more situations as negotiable
• Embrace negotiation as preferable to accepting the status quo,
engaging in direct conflict, or giving up

When: September 22, 2012

Where: United States Capitol

Time: 8:30 am-1pm
