HIV/AIDS IS GRAYING

Mayor Vincent C. Gray was one of many speakers at a recent networking event during the 19th International AIDS Conference held in Washington DC.  Mayor Gray lauded the efforts of the D.C. Department of Health and the Office on Aging for their work in educating older residents on prevention and the distribution of condoms.  He also noted that 15 percent of new HIV/AIDS cases in the District of Columbia are among older adults.

A positive step
The D.C. Department of Health has a funding opportunity for organizations interested in providing prevention and education tools for older adults, visit the following link for details.  The grant closes on August 20.  Also, read a recent Washington Blade article, The Graying of AIDS: Living Longer With HIV.

DISTRICT PURSUES ADDITIONAL GRANT FUNDS

The Office on Aging is being considered for two grants to help the elderly.  The first grant is an elder abuse prevention grant to address the problem of elderly homeowners losing their homes in property tax sales.  This grant is being submitted in partnership with Adult Protective Services and the Legal Counsel for the Elderly to the Administration on Aging.  The second grant is a volunteer engagement program.  The Office on Aging plans to utilize new initiatives to give the District an advantage in the grant selection process. Stay tuned!
