Excessive Heat

Help After the Storm and During Extreme Temperatures

The Government of the District of Columbia declared a state of emergency in response to Friday’s devastating storm and searing temperatures.  The declaration became effective June 30, 2012, and is in effect for 15 days until and unless provided for by further Mayoral Order. The D.C. Office on Aging (DCOA) is working with District agencies and its Senior Service Network to ensure that seniors in private homes, facilities and senior buildings remain cool during these extreme temperatures and have access to alternatives if they are without power.  For more information on accessing cooling sites or obtaining fans, call DCOA at 202-724-5626 or call 311 after normal business hours.  Read more on government resources here and Department of Health (DOH) tips on staying cool.   In addition, the Department of Public Works (DPW) is also accepting food that has spoiled at several locations across the city for disposal, see more. For more information on food safety, click here.

SUSPECT CAPTURED

The D.C. Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has captured the suspect they believe posed as a maintenance worker to gain entry into two apartments.  The two elderly victims were assaulted, robbed and tied up during the crimes.  The Office on Aging worked with MPD to ensure that seniors were made aware of the two crimes and also provided information and safety tips to help prevent future occurrences. The Office on Aging encourages senior citizens to ask for proper identification before allowing unknown persons in their home. Click here for details of the crimes.  The details of the arrest as reported by the Washington Post.

DCOA To Hold Community Meetings

The Office on Aging (DCOA) will hold two community meetings on the Senior Needs Assessment: Initial Data Collection. Community stakeholders are invited to a briefing on the findings of a recently completed report commissioned by the DCOA.  The data will assist the office in developing  long range plans to meet the demands of the growing population.

Funding Opportunity

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have announced the Community Transformation Grants - Small Communities Programs financed solely by 2012 Prevention and Public Health Funds. The purpose of the grant is to promote healthy lifestyles in small communities and improve health behaviors.  This will assist in the prevention of heart attack, stroke, cancer, diabetes and other leading chronic diseases and causes of death or disability.   The program aims to achieve this goal by supporting governmental and nongovernmental agencies and organizations, from multiple sectors, to implement evidence based strategies that align with their mission and to partner with agencies and organizations in other sectors to improve community health. The discretionary grant is CDC-RFA-DP12-1216PPHF12 and closes July 31, 2012. For more information, visit www.grants.gov.
