Help After the Storm and During Extreme Temperatures
The
Government of the District of Columbia declared a state of emergency in
response to Friday’s devastating storm and searing temperatures. The declaration became effective June 30, 2012, and is in
effect for 15 days until and unless provided for by further Mayoral Order. The D.C. Office on Aging (DCOA) is working with
District agencies and its Senior Service Network to ensure that seniors in private homes, facilities and senior buildings remain cool during these extreme temperatures and have access to alternatives if they are without power. For more information on accessing cooling sites or obtaining fans, call DCOA at
202-724-5626 or call 311 after normal business hours. Read more on government resources here and Department of Health (DOH) tips on staying cool. In addition, the Department of Public Works (DPW) is also accepting food that has spoiled at several locations across the city for disposal, see more. For more information on food safety, click here.
