Dear Washingtonians,
This week, we opened the new DC Infrastructure Academy at the historic Spingarn High School in Ward 5. DC residents have given me the great opportunity to do big things in the city that I love, and there really is no bigger thing than making sure DC residents from all eight wards can be a part of the prosperity that we are building in this city.
When we launched the DCIA nearly nine years ago, I told our founding utility partners that I love training programs, I really do—but I hate ones where there are no jobs at the end. So, I said, this one will be different; if you participate with us and our residents participate and do everything they have to do, there will be a job at the end. And I’m proud that we’ve lived up to that standard. More than 6,500 participants have trained at the Infrastructure Academy. In the past year alone, DCIA served over 600 participants. More than 5,000 graduates have been successfully matched to employment.
So, to the residents who have already signed up and gone through training: thank you for trusting the process. Sometimes when people sign up for programs like this, they've seen a lot, they've heard a lot of promises, they've done their part, and it didn't quite work out. Together, at the DCIA, we are changing that narrative.
DCIA will maintain its presence at Shannon Place SE in Ward 8 where IT and cybersecurity training programs will continue. The new location, which features an automotive lab, new instructional and training rooms, a Pepco training yard, and flexible outdoor work areas, will allow us to expand opportunities.
Residents looking for in-demand careers in construction, energy, telecommunications, and other critical fields are encouraged to explore opportunities with the DC Infrastructure Academy by visiting dcia.dc.gov.
Sincerely,
On Saturday, October 17, join the Department of Energy and Environment and community partners for the 6th Annual Kingman Island Friends and Family Day.
