The Department of For-Hire Vehicles hosted DFHV 10 Years in Motion: Taxi Driver Recognition and Anniversary Ceremony to commemorate 10 years since its chartering. The ceremony, held at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, was emceed by Kimberly Clark, Chief Performance Officer, whose energy set the stage for the festivities.
Attendees heard remarks from Director Jonathan Rogers, Dr. Chris Rodriguez, Assistant City Administrator, and Ernest Chrappah, former director. Each speaker reflected on DFHV’s journey through the past decade, touching on the expansion of technology and rideshares and their impact on the industry, and the resilience demonstrated during the global pandemic. They also shared personal reflections about their connections to the industry.
Taxicab drivers with exemplary driving records and employees who served at DFHV between 11 and 40 years were awarded certificates and commemorative plaques as a token to their committed service to DFHV and the greater DC community. The celebration continued with live music, tasty refreshments, and interactive photo activities. Guests also had the chance to take a trip down memory lane with a historic artifact and photo exhibit, showcasing DFHV’s history.
Thank you to all members of the planning committee who helped make this milestone celebration a success, and for your participation and work that has preserved DFHV’s legacy through the years. DFHV is proud to commemorate our history, drivers, and staff, and excited to chart our path forward over the next decade. Congratulations to our honorees!

DFHV is considering launching an overnight wheelchair-accessible taxi fleet. This initiative aims to better understand and address the needs for wheelchair-accessible vehicles during overnight hours, making transportation more inclusive and accessible.
This month, the Office of Contracting and Procurement (OCP) has released a Request for Proposal (RFP) regarding this opportunity. To learn more about this solicitation visit OCP for more information.
DFHV is actively recruiting individuals to join the For Hire Vehicle Advisory (FHVAC) Council! We are looking to fill the following positions:
- DC Residents (2)
- Taxi Drivers (1)
- Hotel and Tourism Industry (2)
- Carriers For-Hire Operators (2)
- Carriers For-Hire Companies (2)
As part of the Council, members have a unique opportunity to share their insights and help shape decisions that directly impact drivers, passengers, and the broader for-hire industry. FHVAC recommendations play a critical role in guiding the agency’s future direction to better serve the community. FHVAC members are required to serve a three-year term, and general body meetings are held quarterly. For more information, contact Lindsey de Boo at Lindsey.deboo@dc.gov.
License plates must be visible. Avoid covering your license plate with obstructive covers. Vehicles with obstructed tags are subject to a $50 fine.
All taxis must accept credit cards and electronic payments. Customers told to pay only in cash may file complaints with DFHV. Drivers not accepting electronic payments may face $100 fines. Taxi drivers must use their meters; failure to do so or being caught using faulty meters can result in a $500 fine. Signs requesting "cash only" are prohibited.
Keep these road safety reminders in mind.
- U-turns are illegal and can be dangerous.
- Slow down and obey the speed limit. Higher speeds are more likely to cause injury or death.
- Give cyclists space. Don’t park in the bike lane or double park, this forces cyclists into busy roads.
- Blocking bike lanes, bus lanes, or traffic lanes is dangerous for all users. Use designated pick-up and drop-off areas instead.
- Always stop at stop signs and look for pedestrians and cyclists. Always stop for pedestrians at crossings and wait for them to cross before continuing.
- Passengers, remember to remain alert of your surroundings, travel with friends, and know your driver. If you’re taking a taxi or rideshare service, make note of your driver’s ID or tag number and always let your friends and family know where you are.
