The Department of For-Hire Vehicles (DFHV) has extended the $1 Emergency Fuel Surcharge until December 25, 2026. First implemented in April, the surcharge aims to help drivers manage rising operational costs and continue providing service to District residents and visitors. DFHV recently launched a live chat, a new digital support tool aimed to assist drivers by providing quick and convenient access to essential information. The chat bubble, located at the bottom right corner of dfhv.dc.gov as well as inside the Driver Portal, is available to connect drivers with live Client Services representatives in real time. Customers can ask questions about a wide range of topics, and our team is ready to offer immediate support right when you need it.

DFHV announces the beginning of Open Season for drivers to select or renew their Digital Taxicab Solution (DTS) providers. DTS providers service District taxicabs with digital taximeters. Drivers are advised to contact or visit DTS providers’ websites for more details and carefully evaluate the features and terms.
Drivers must select or renew their DTS no later than September 1st of every calendar year, but they have the option to change DTS providers throughout the year subject to contract terms. To protect drivers and expand their choices, DFHV limits DTS contracts to a maximum of one year, September 1 - August 31. Some providers offer shorter contracts.

Please make sure that your contact information is up to date with the Client Services Department. Keeping your information current is helpful to receiving timely communication from DFHV.

When you receive a Notice of Complaint, please respond promptly and follow the instructions provided. Ignoring or delaying your response could result in fines, suspensions, and other enforcement penalties. Additionally, unanswered notices may cause delays in renewing your Face ID, so taking timely action is helpful.

Notice of Infractions issued by Vehicle Inspection Officers are treated with the same urgency as Notices of Complaint.
If you encounter any issues during your service, you have the right to file a complaint.

DFHV is looking for taxi, Uber, or Lyft drivers who are District residents to join the For-Hire Vehicle Advisory Council (FHVAC). As part of the Council, members have a unique opportunity to share their insights and help shape decisions that directly impact drivers, passengers, and the broader for-hire industry. FHVAC recommendations play a critical role in guiding the agency’s future direction to better serve the community. License plates must be visible. Avoid covering your license plate with obstructive covers. Vehicles with obstructed tags are subject to a $50 fine.
All taxis must accept credit cards and electronic payments. Customers told to pay only in cash may file complaints with DFHV. Drivers not accepting electronic payments may face $100 fines. Taxi drivers must use their meters; failure to do so or being caught using faulty meters can result in a $500 fine. Signs requesting "cash only" are prohibited.
Keep these road safety reminders in mind.
- U-turns are illegal and can be dangerous.
- Slow down and obey the speed limit. Higher speeds are more likely to cause injury or death.
- Give cyclists space. Don’t park in the bike lane or double park, this forces cyclists into busy roads.
- Blocking bike lanes, bus lanes, or traffic lanes is dangerous for all users. Use designated pick-up and drop-off areas instead.
- Always stop at stop signs and look for pedestrians and cyclists. Always stop for pedestrians at crossings and wait for them to cross before continuing.
- Passengers, remember to remain alert of your surroundings, travel with friends, and know your driver. If you’re taking a taxi or rideshare service, make note of your driver’s ID or tag number and always let your friends and family know where you are.
