Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

This week, we announced that for the fourth year in a row, DC students made academic gains in both math and reading on the citywide assessment. This builds on the good news we got earlier this year: that DC students have led the nation in post-pandemic academic recovery in both reading and math. Now, with the new assessment data, we have an even better sense of how we can continue to build on that progress.

And we don’t have to wait long to get to work because Monday is my favorite day of the year – the first day of school!

On Monday, tens of thousands of young people across all eight wards will begin a new year of opportunity and possibility. And we’re ready to welcome them back! From 7:45 to 9:00 a.m., community members and volunteers will gather outside schools across DC to clap our kids back with spirit tunnels, pom poms, and positivity. If you’re interested in joining, go here and let us know which school you'll attend.

Throughout the weekend, partners and community organizations are hosting backpack giveaways and school supply distributions at family-friendly events across the city. Among other events, you can celebrate at the Emery Heights Backpack Giveaway, the Serenity Management Annual Back-to-School Giveaway, and the Riggs LaSalle Back-to-School Event.

Families, make sure you have your bedtime routines ready for Sunday night. Everyone, let’s work together on Monday to help our students get to and from school safely. If you will be driving, slow down, watch out for pedestrians, and be extra cautious near schools and buses. And let's all be ready to show our young people that their city is rooting for them!

Have a great weekend and see you on Monday.

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowser
