The countdown is on ‘til the first day of school. Is your family ready? If you’re not sure, we can help you find out with our new Back to School Checklist.
The checklist is organized into four “to-do” lists that guide families through some of the most important back-to-school tasks:
- Enrollment: information on enrolling at an in-boundary DCPS school; applying to public charter schools, out-of-boundary and citywide DCPS schools, and pre-K through the My School DC lottery; and resources for early childhood, special education, and career and technical education.
- Health Records and Immunizations: required forms, annual medical and dental visits, and DC’s immunization requirements.
- Getting To and From School: information about Kids Ride Free, Safe Passage, and transportation services for students with special needs.
- Attendance: tips for building strong attendance habits, understanding District attendance requirements, and connecting families with support services if challenges arise.
My favorite day of the year is the first day of school because it’s a day filled with so much joy, excitement, and promise. We also know how important the first few days and weeks of school are for helping our students have a great school year.

 Looking for a fun way to spend time outdoors this weekend? Join the Department of Parks and Recreation for their guided hike series!
This Saturday, Hike Club is hosting a beginner-friendly hike filled with fresh air, good music, and great company. Come for the hike, and stay for the dancing and community!
Children and dogs are welcome and must be accompanied by their caretaker at all times.

 The Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement (ONSE) invites teens, families, and community members to Level Up for the New School Year, a free back-to-school community event designed to help students start the school year prepared, confident, and connected.
This will be an action-packed day designed just for DC youth ages 13–18 and their families. Enjoy interactive workshops, wellness activities, educational resources, career exploration opportunities, giveaways, entertainment, and connections to community organizations and service providers.
