Congratulations to Yellow Cab for demonstrating their ongoing commitment to promoting accessible transportation! Through the DFHV WAV Incentive Grant Program, Yellow Cab has added five brand-new, DFHV-registered 2025 Toyota Sienna Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles (WAVs) to its fleet. These state-of-the-art vehicles are one the roads serving passengers who use wheelchairs.
This recent investment is a meaningful step forward in strengthening transportation and mobility equity. By expanding their accessible fleet, Yellow Cab is demonstrating the industry’s dedication to ensuring residents and visitors have the transportation options they need.
 This month, the DC Council’s Committee on Transportation & Environment held a hearing to address proposed legislation, B26-0684, the Autonomous Vehicles Deployment Authorization Amendment Act of 2026 and the broader autonomous vehicle (AV) industry.
Director Jonathan Rogers took the opportunity to highlight DFHV’s core mission: to provide safe, accessible, and affordable transportation options to District residents and visitors. His testimony emphasized the deployment of AVs, whether for passenger services or deliveries, must follow these principles when carrying out services. Director Rogers called for operators to demonstrate safe operations and advocated for a phased rollout, so equity and accessibility are integrated from the start.
Another key point raised was the need to assess the impacts of AV deployment on existing transportation businesses. Director Rogers highlighted concerns for the District’s taxi drivers and for-hire workforce, who may be disproportionately affected by the rapid expansion of AVs. He also discussed ongoing challenges related to congestion and environmental impact issues that are already present with today’s rideshare services.
These concerns reinforce the importance of adopting a unified regulatory framework for AVs which would ensure safe, effective and equitable service in the future.
The Mubadala DC Open, will begin on Saturday, July 25 through Sunday, August 2. During the tennis tournament, all rideshare services will must use the designated pick-up and drop-off location at 4850 Colorado Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20011. Drivers will be directed to enter through the Carter Barron Amphitheater Box Office Access Road, also known as the Carter Barron Amphitheater Box Office Circle.
Please note that pick-ups and drop-offs will not be permitted on Colorado Avenue NW at any time throughout the event. This restriction is designed to ensure smooth traffic flow and a safer experience for tournament attendees.
 The Department of For-Hire Vehicles (DFHV) is excited to continue the Non-District Limousine (NDL) Conversation Series, a forum aimed to keep you updated with the latest developments in the NDL industry. On August 26, DFHV’s Office of the General Counsel will host part three of the series entitled Understanding Rules and Regulations. The series will be offered in a hybrid format, with both in-person and virtual attendance options available. We hope you to join us and be part of the conversation!

FHVAC recommendations play a critical role in guiding the agency’s future direction to better serve the community. License plates must be visible. Avoid covering your license plate with obstructive covers. Vehicles with obstructed tags are subject to a $50 fine.
All taxis must accept credit cards and electronic payments. Customers told to pay only in cash may file complaints with DFHV. Drivers not accepting electronic payments may face $100 fines. Taxi drivers must use their meters; failure to do so or being caught using faulty meters can result in a $500 fine. Signs requesting "cash only" are prohibited.
Keep these road safety reminders in mind.
- U-turns are illegal and can be dangerous.
- Slow down and obey the speed limit. Higher speeds are more likely to cause injury or death.
- Give cyclists space. Don’t park in the bike lane or double park, this forces cyclists into busy roads.
- Blocking bike lanes, bus lanes, or traffic lanes is dangerous for all users. Use designated pick-up and drop-off areas instead.
- Always stop at stop signs and look for pedestrians and cyclists. Always stop for pedestrians at crossings and wait for them to cross before continuing.
- Passengers, remember to remain alert of your surroundings, travel with friends, and know your driver. If you’re taking a taxi or rideshare service, make note of your driver’s ID or tag number and always let your friends and family know where you are.
