December 24, 2025
Dear Washingtonians,
No matter how you celebrate, December is a beautiful time in our city. From holiday markets to ice skating rinks, DC does a wonderful job of getting in the holiday spirit and I’m grateful for all the people who work together to make it happen.
With schools closed for winter break, I’m also grateful for the many people and programs that are helping our young people stay engaged in safe and fun environments. If you have a child or teen at home, I encourage you to check out DPR’s line-up of winter break events, including the return of Teen Break Time.
Of course, we know that many children across DC are filled with excitement today. And it is always my hope for our city that every child feels loved and supported – at home and by their community. One way we can work together to make that happen is by making sure our young people know about and are connected to the programs and activities happening just for them, so spread the word.
I hope you have a wonderful final week of 2025.
Merry Christmas and happy holidays, DC.

It is now officially winter, which also means it is a great time to sign up to be a Snow Team Hero. Snow Team Heroes are deployed after snowfall to help community members who need assistance clearing walkways and driveways. Volunteers receive support, training, and materials to help them with their service.
Residents can register to volunteer, receive assignments, and learn about winter readiness resources at snowteam.dc.gov. Those in need of assistance from the Snow Team can also register at snowteam.dc.gov.

The DC Department of Public Works (DPW) will not collect household trash, recycling, and food waste on Thursday, December 25. Trash and recycling collections will “slide” for the remainder of the week into Saturday. For example, households that normally receive trash and recycling collections on Thursday will be serviced on Friday. Leaf collection will operate on schedule.

Leaf Collection in Section D continues next week, and second round collection will begin in early January, starting with Section A. Rake your leaves into the tree box or curb in front of your home. Paper bags are welcome if you’d like, but please don’t use plastic bags, as they can’t be composted. Check your collection section and sign up for updates to stay informed.
