Hello Serve Ambassadors,
This past month has been extremely busy but exciting for Serve DC! On behalf of Mayor Muriel Bowser, we have been focusing on elevating all volunteers as well as our DC youth.
In partnership with the National CERT Association, we co-hosted the 2024 National CERT Conference (July 22-26) to the District for the first time. CERT is comprised of volunteers who are certified to administer assistance during an emergency or disaster, before Fire EMS or an ambulance arrives.
There were over 600 attendees from 40 states and territories including DC residents who came to participate in workshops that further developed their emergency management skills.
This month, we hosted the first-ever SYEPA(Summer Youth Emergency Preparedness Academy) trunk party, giving 13 of our 35 students necessary dorm room essentials. In the District of Columbia, we make it a point to recognize high school seniors participating in our program under the Marion Barry Jr. Summer Youth Program according to need.
Serve DC trains DC Youth ages 16-21 to have critical life-saving skills such as CERT, CPR/First Aid, AED, and "Stop the Bleed. Our students have worked hard this summer, and I am happy we can support them as they embark on their continued education journey. We are deeply grateful for the continued support from JP Morgan Chase, which has enabled us to provide each of our SYEPA students with laptops, allowing them to be prepared for school this coming school year. As the program ends for the summer, each student will receive training certifications and have access to mentorship opportunities for public service and emergency management careers.
This entire month has really demonstrated how rewarding volunteerism can be!
I want to continue to urge each of you to consider the ways that you can contribute to the spirit of volunteerism this summer by visiting our Galaxy Portal. There are limitless opportunities where you can give back.
Lastly, I am looking forward to learning more about DC's amazing community organizations through your Spirit of Service Award Nominations. I am so proud of how Mayor Bowser and Serve DC recognize those who commit to service! We will host the awards this upcoming September so stay tuned for more details.
Thank you for giving us meaningful and intentional ways to support our communities!
In partnership and collaboration,
 Jermaine Dillon
