June 2024

A Message from Director Robinson

Gabriel Robinson

As the summer travel season begins, I encourage everyone to be safe and follow the rules of the road. June is National Safety Month, the annual observance to help keep each other safe, from the workplace to any place.

When traveling in our beautiful city, please follow posted speed limits, and watch for pedestrians and cyclists, particularly when approaching intersections. By taking these actions, we can all help achieve the Mayor's Vision Zero goal of zero fatalities and serious injuries to travelers.

In this month's newsletter, we include some important tips to prevent heatstroke resulting from children being left in hot vehicles. We've all heard the tragic stories of young lives lost through vehicle heatstroke and following these tips may help prevent another sad headline.

Additionally, please read on to learn about DMV's Permit Prep Bootcamp taking place this summer for young District residents who wish to take and pass the DC DMV Knowledge Test to obtain a driver license.

And as a reminder, please join us for our DC DMV Live Chat the first Thursday of each month. We will be online for a full hour to respond in real-time to any of your DC DMV-related questions. Our next online live chat is scheduled for Thursday, August 1 at 12 p.m.

Thank you for reading this edition of our newsletter. Enjoy and stay safe!

Keeping kids safe from heatstroke

child heatstroke

Heatstroke is one of the leading causes of non-crash-related fatalities among children. Over the past 25 years, more than 965 children have died of heatstroke, because they were left or became trapped in a hot car. It’s important for everyone to understand these tragedies can happen to anyone – but are always preventable.

Vehicle heatstroke occurs when a child is left in a hot vehicle, allowing the child's temperature to rise in a quick and deadly manner. Whether you're a parent, caregiver, or witness to a child left in a car, it's vitally important to understand children are more vulnerable to heatstroke than adults.

Heatstroke prevention tips:

  • Keep your vehicle locked and keep your keys out of reach; nearly 3 in 10 heatstroke deaths happen when an unattended child gains access to a vehicle.
  • Take action if you notice a child alone in a car. Protecting children is everyone’s business—learn what to do if you see a child alone in a car
  • It is never okay to leave a child alone in or around a car for any reason.
  • Even in cooler temperatures, your vehicle can heat up to dangerous temperatures very quickly. An outside temperature in the mid-60s can cause the inside temperature of a vehicle to rise above 110 degrees Fahrenheit. The inside temperature of your car can rise almost 20 degrees Fahrenheit within the first 10 minutes.
  • Remember, heatstroke does not only occur during the summertime or in the Sun Belt States. This deadly issue can occur at any time of year, in any weather condition, in any community—for any parent.

DC DMV hosts Permit Prep Bootcamp for young adults

permit prep camp

District residents aged 16 to 21 who are interested in taking the DC DMV Knowledge Test are invited to register for our upcoming Permit Prep Bootcamp, a three-day summer bootcamp aimed at helping test-takers pass.

The goal is to increase the number of teenagers and young adults who pass the DMV Knowledge Test. With a comprehensive curriculum and three 2.5-hours classes, the bootcamp is designed to help students gain a better understanding of:

  • The rules of the road
  • Road signs and symbols
  • Safety protocols
  • Test-taking strategies

The class will review traffic laws, road signs, and driving safety rules, as well as tips for correctly answering multiple-choice and true-false questions. Students will also take practice exams, preview problem areas, and receive customized improvement plans and study materials.

Students will leave the boot camp with the confidence, knowledge, and prep materials necessary to pass the DC DMV Knowledge Test.

For more information, and to register for the DC Permit Prep bootcamp, visit our program website here. Space is limited; registration will close June 28 or once classes are full. Classes begin July 9.

DC DMV participates in Mayor Bowser's Senior celebrations

DC Senior Fest 2024

DC DMV recently participated in the Department of Parks & Recreation's annual Senior Fest celebration on May 29, a fun-filled event hosted by Mayor Bowser and dedicated to District residents over 55.

The DMV team was "on the Yard" at the University of the District of Columbia to answer questions, connect and share resources with festival attendees, give away swag and enjoy the music, food and fun!

Our team looks forward to engaging with District seniors each year, honoring our commitment to serving our city's most vulnerable residents, and ensuring that senior drivers are able to access the DMV resources they need.

The DMV team will also participate in the Mayor's Senior Symposium on June 25. For more helpful information geared towards residents 55 and older, visit our senior website here.

Commemorating Juneteenth

Juneteenth

June 19, 1865, is the oldest national celebration of the ending of slavery in the United States, commemorating freedom, resilience, and the power of unity.

At DC DMV, we recognize this day celebrating the journey and freedom of those who were enslaved in America.

All DMV locations will be closed on Wednesday, June 19. Regular business hours will resume on Thursday, June 20.
