April 2023

There are only a few things that every person has in common. But one common link is that we all share the same home: planet Earth. While many efforts to live sustainably with the Earth were ongoing for generations before, a new movement was sparked with the first Earth Day on April 22 in 1970. At the time, there was no U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, no Clean Air Act, and no Clean Water Act. The impact of the implementation of these landmark milestones is still felt today. For example, the Clean Water Act is behind the massive Clean Rivers Project led by DC Water that’s reducing sewer overflows into the District’s waterways and bringing us closer to fishable and swimmable rivers.
More than 50 years after the first event, Earth Day is still alive and well. There are plenty of opportunities to celebrate right here in the District. Check out the events section below for activities to join, or get out there and celebrate your own way with a local cleanup, educational event, or otherwise!
