Honoring Sheroes In the Movement

Brandynicole Brooks is a Supervisory Social Worker in the Office of Youth Empowerment with the District of Columbia’s Child and Family Services Agency (CFSA). She co-chairs the CFSA LGBTQ Taskforce which focuses on ensuring the LGBTQ community within the agency and whom the agency has contact with are treated with respect and dignity through education, advocacy and support.

Nancy D. Polikoff is Professor of Law at American University Washington College of Law, where she teaches in the areas of family law, civil procedure, and sexuality and the law. Previously, she supervised family law programs at the Women’s Legal Defense Fund (now National Partnership for Women and Families), and before that she practiced law as part of a feminist law collective. For 30 years, she has been writing about and litigating cases involving lesbian and gay families.

Mary Snider, a native Washington, is owner of Mary Snider State Farm, a multiple-line Insurance and Financial Services Agency serving Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia, which she has been doing for 25 years.  She is a long-time supporter of numerous LGBT organizations, including HRC, Victory Fund, Mautner Project, Equality Maryland, CAGLCC, Gertrude Stein, Smyal.   Ms. Snider is also a former member and co-chair of Human Rights Campaign Board of Directors and is Active fundraiser for number of Democratic candidates.

For 20 years, D Magrini has worked to reduce health disparities and improve access to culturally sensitive care for underserved and vulnerable women, particularly those in the lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities.  Ms. Magrini is the lead instructor of Mautner Project’s Removing the Barriers program – a cultural competency training for doctors, nurses and social workers that is certified for continuing education credits for these health care professionals.  Removing the barriers is designed to assist medical providers to provide more culturally competent care by identifying barriers to care often faced by sexual minorities, particularly women-who-partner-with-women, and how those impact their access to preventive health screenings.

Jimma Elliott-Stevens is currently a privacy and data protection attorney.  Jimma has worked in the gay and lesbian community for many years, and she has assisted a number of clients who faced civil and human rights violations in the workplace. Jimma has also served on the Board of Directors for DC Black Pride for past 4 years, where she has assisted the board as an advisor and pro bono attorney, particularly assisting with contractual issues.
wohlfarth
Ms. Wohlfarth enjoyed a successful seventeen-year career as a Washington, D.C. restaurateur. Following a one year sabbatical in 1987, she started a new career as a gallerist, and established Wohlfarth Galleries in the Washington, D.C. neighborhood of Brookland in which she lives. A second, seasonal gallery was established 1991, in the art colony of Provincetown, Massachusetts. Both galleries continue to thrive today. In 1999, Wohlfarth founded The Brookland Community Development Corporation in her North East, Washington, D.C. neighborhood, to focus on history, the arts, and the revitalization of the commercial district in her community. Two years later the BCDC was awarded The Main Street Grant from Mayor Anthony A. Williams, and Wohlfarth chaired the Historic Brookland Main Street program for the 5 year grant period.
 

Promoting Why Safe Sex Matters Event

With the introduction of PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis), and the increased use and efficacy of new anti-retroviral drugs that reduce the viral load, does the community still need to practice safe sex?  What can we do as a community to promote safe sex practices? Join a panel of experts for a conversation that tackles this topic as well as other issues surrounding safe sex.  This conversation will also include information on the importance of practicing safe sex and strategies that can be used to increase the health of the community.
