Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

The holidays are a time for gratitude, and I want to share my gratitude for everyone who has shared their big ideas with me over the past six weeks. I asked you to submit your big ideas for the future of DC, and you did. I’ve heard from students and seniors, from moms and grandmas, from longtime Washingtonians and people who are new to our city.

Especially after the past few years, we all know the power of big ideas. It was, after all, only two years ago when we were advising people to celebrate the holidays at home – to put traditions on hold to protect our city and each other. Now, two years later, we’re grateful for the scientists and medical professionals who delivered a vaccine to the world so quickly – and then delivered an updated one this year. Big ideas lead to big solutions.

If you still want to share your big ideas for the future of DC, you can submit them at together.dc.gov.

Finally, as we head into the weekend, I also want to acknowledge that the holidays can be a particularly stressful time of year. Please remember that DC has a free Mental Health Hotline that will connect you to a trained professional, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The number for the Mental Health Hotline is 1-888-793-4357 or you can call 988 and get connected to support. It is normal to feel depressed, anxious, or just not yourself at times, even and especially around the holidays; it also normal to seek out help when that happens.

Have a safe, fun weekend. Merry Christmas and happy holidays!

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowser
