Lane Closures and New Traffic Pattern on Suitland Parkway Starting Thursday, August 4, 2022
(Washington, D.C.) —The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will reconfigure the eastbound and westbound lanes of Suitland Parkway into its ultimate configuration through the intersection with Firth Sterling Avenue SE. This configuration will be in place for the morning peak period on Thursday, August 4.
During the overnight hours on Wednesday, August 3, eastbound Suitland Parkway will be closed between South Capitol Street and Firth Sterling Avenue. Westbound Suitland Parkway will be closed between Firth Sterling Avenue SE and Howard Road SE. The ramps from northbound and southbound I-295 to eastbound Suitland Parkway will be closed; access to South Capitol Street will be continuously provided. Left turns will not be permitted from southbound Firth Sterling Avenue onto eastbound Suitland Parkway.
The intersection of Suitland Parkway and Firth Sterling Avenue SE will be controlled by flaggers. These closures will start at 9:00 p.m. or two hours after the end of the baseball game at Nationals Park (whichever occurs later) and will extend until 5:00 a.m. the following morning.
Marked detours will be provided through the area as shown below. WMATA transit vehicles will be allowed to proceed through the intersection in order to maintain their routes.
Detour – Eastbound and Westbound Suitland Parkway
Detours – Ramps from I-295 Northbound and Southbound to Eastbound Suitland Parkway
These changes are necessary for construction activities associated with the South Capitol Street Corridor Project which includes construction of the New Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge and the reconstruction of the I-295/ Suitland Parkway interchange.
