Message from Lucinda, the Deputy Mayor
Hey DC! It’s summertime and now that #DCIsOpen, this means you and your family can enjoy many outdoor activities over the coming weeks.
The DMOI cluster got the season off to a great start on June 4, as walkers, cyclists, and scooterists took over 7th Street NW in Wards 2 and 6 during the District Department of Transportation’s (DDOT’s) Open Streets DC. Get ready, because the next takeovers are Saturday, July 30 along Benning Road NE in Ward 7; and Saturday, August 27 along Ward 5’s 12th Street NE!
If you love flowers and the insects that nurture them, the Department of Energy and Environment’s (DOEE) Pollinator’s Festival at Kingman and Heritage Islands on June 25 provided lots of tips on how on to protect pollinators. If you missed it, the Islands are always open to explore, and DOEE has lots of other resources on urban agriculture, fishing, gardening, and more!
As you plan cookouts and gatherings in public areas, or are just out enjoying the great outdoors, remember that our Department of Public Works (DPW) loves to keep our city clean—but they need your help! Please dispose of your trash properly—and only use public litter cans for transient waste; not for your household trash.
If you are beginning summer home improvement projects, check the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) website to apply for any necessary permits.
Our Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking (DISB) may not first come to mind when you think about weather, but it helps inform residents about the flooding risks that heighten this time of year due to summer storms.
The summer usually means more road trips. In cases of short ones around the city, consider using some services from the Department of For-Hire Vehicles (DFHV), such as DC Neighborhood Connect. If you have your own vehicle—or are planning to get one—for longer rides, make sure your vehicle has an updated inspection and registration—and if not, use the Department of Motor Vehicles (DC DMV) online services when possible.
Enjoy your summer and stay safe!
