Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

As we head into the three-day Labor Day weekend, I want to congratulate our community on a fantastic first week of school. We saw smiling students at schools across our city, educators welcoming our young people back with joyful lessons and new protocols, and families going above and beyond to support their school communities.

Please be safe this weekend, limit or skip travel, and choose your activities wisely. In working together, we can keep our classrooms and schools open and give our young people the joyful school year they deserve.

Take the Stronger and Safer Together Pledge

To help protect our students, support DCPS staff, and safeguard our community, I pledge to:

Wear my mask at school and on school grounds at all times, and when in close proximity to others outside my household.

Get the COVID-19 vaccine if I'm eligible.

Wherever possible, maintain physical distance from those outside my household.

Practice safe hygiene, like washing my hands for at least 20 seconds and using hand sanitizer regularly.

Limit or postpone nonessential travel to areas outside of the DC, Maryland, and Virginia region.

Choose family activities that minimize the risk of COVID-19 spread.

Complete my daily health assessment to monitor any symptoms of COVID-19.

Stay home if I do not feel well or have symptoms of COVID-19.

Immediately alert my school if I test positive for COVID-19 and work with contact tracers to identify any close contacts.

Be a champion for health and safety in my community.

Safer and Stronger Pledge

Have a safe weekend, DC.

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowser

Do you need to renew your license?

DMV September 9

Residents have until September 9, 2021 to renew their expired driver licenses and identification cards. If expired driver licenses are not renewed by September 9, drivers will need to take these additional steps:

  • If your DC DMV driver license has been expired for more than 365 days from March 1, 2020, you must take and pass the knowledge test OR take the District’s online traffic school course.
  • If your DC driver license has been expired for more than 545 days from March 1, 2020, you must take and pass two tests: knowledge and road skills (by appointment only).

Drivers are also reminded that the four-month ticket amnesty program will end on September 30, 2021. During the amnesty period, the penalties drivers incurred on tickets are being waived. At the end of the amnesty period, all penalties will be added back on all tickets. Learn more about how to participate in the amnesty program HERE
