What's New With Your MayorGray Lauds Obama's Push For D.C. Budget Autonomy![]() D.C.
Mayor Vincent Gray and other city leaders hailed the Obama Administration's
push to give the city more budget autonomy at a gathering on the front steps of
the Wilson Building Monday.
If the
provision in the President's budget is adopted by Congress, and that's a big
if, D.C. would be able to avoid some of the nightmare scenarios that threaten
the District every time there is talk of a federal government shutdown. Because
D.C. is essentially treated as a department of the federal government, the
city's budget is tied to the federal appropriations bill. So that means if
the federal government shuts down, so too does most of the District government,
including garbage pickup, parking enforcement and many other basic services.
District Launches New Ad Campaign Promoting School Attendance
Mayor Vincent C. Gray, Deputy Mayor for Education De’Shawn Wright, Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services Beatriz “BB” Otero and the Honorable Zoe Bush, Associate Judge, D.C. Superior Court will unveil a new citywide ad campaign that reinforces the link between consistent school attendance and academic success. Research shows that missing even one day of school every few weeks can prevent a student from graduating on time. The campaign features motivational stories of five District students who, in some cases, reversed failing grades and chronic truancy to get back on track.

Young, urban and culturally savvy, meet the Afropolitans
(CNN) -- Young, urban and culturally savvy, meet the Afropolitans -- a new generation of Africans and people of African descent with a very global outlook.
Something of a buzzword in the diaspora, the term "Afropolitan" first appeared in a 2005 magazine article by Nigerian/Ghanaian writer Taiye Selasi. Selasi wrote about multilingual Africans with different ethnic mixes living around the globe -- as she put it "not citizens but Africans of the world."

D.C. area sees third-highest increase in foreign-born residents: by percentage African-born residents increased at the swiftest pace
" I would
project African immigrants to be the fastest-growing group for some time
particularly with the area's demand for highly educated people"- Randy Capps, Senior Policy Analyst at the Migration Policy Institute
The foreign-born population in the Washington area soared by 20 percent over five years -- the third-highest spike among metropolitan areas at a time when immigration has slowed nationwide.
The ranks of Washington-area residents born outside the United States swelled by 200,000 between 2005 and 2010, for a surge in the immigrant population that proportionally exceeded that of every major metropolitan area except Seattle and Houston, respectively, according to a new study from the George Mason University Center for Regional Analysis. The 20 percent surge was twice as high as the region's overall 9.6 percent population growth during the same period.
