DDOT TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Temporary Lane Closures for I-395 Sign Structure Improvement Project from May 17 through May 22, 2021

(Washington, DC)—The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will temporarily close lanes, ramps and shoulders on the following roadways to perform construction activities along I-395 and I-695 for the replacement of signage and sign structures. Work is scheduled to take place starting Monday, May 17 through Saturday, May 22, 2021. These closure dates and times are contingent on suitable weather, field conditions, and/or adjacent construction activities. 

 

The following are the lane and shoulder closures that will be in place during the following days and time-periods.

 

Weekdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.:

• Single Left Lane Closure on I-395 Northbound between 7^th Street SW and Center Leg Freeway.
• Single Right Lane Closure on I-395 Northbound between 7^th Street SW and Center Leg Freeway.
• Single Left Lane Closure on I-395 Southbound between Center Leg Freeway and 7^th Street SW.
• Single Right Lane Closure on I-395 Southbound between Maine Avenue SW and 12^th Street Expressway.
• Single Right Lane Closure in both directions on New York Avenue NE from West Virginia Avenue NE to east of Bladensburg Road NE (starting at 9:30 a.m.).

Weeknights from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. the following morning:

• Double Left Lane Closures in both directions on New York Avenue NE from West Virginia Avenue NE to east of Bladensburg Avenue NE.

Friday Night, May 21, 2021 from 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. the following morning:

• Full closures of the ramp from 7^th Street SW to I-395 Northbound/I-695 Eastbound. Starting at 8:00 p.m.
• Full closure of the ramp from I-395 Northbound to C Street SW. Starting at 8:00 p.m.
• Full closure of the ramp from I-695 Westbound to Center Leg Freeway. Starting at 8:00 p.m.
• Single Left Lane Closure on the ramp from I-395 Northbound to Center Leg Freeway. Starting at 8:00 p.m.
• Intermittent 30-minute full stoppages on the ramp from I-395 Northbound to Center Leg Freeway. Starting at 11:00 p.m.

 

For the closure of the ramps from South Capitol Street and I-695 Westbound to the Center Leg Freeway, vehicles will be detoured to I-395 Southbound, 7^th Street SW, Independence Avenue SW, and Washington Avenue SW.  For the closure of the ramp from 7^th Street SW to I-395 Northbound, vehicles will be detoured via Maine Avenue SW, M Street SW, and South Capitol Street.

These closures are required for construction activities associated with the following DDOT project:

 

Interstate 395 Sign Structure Improvement Project

The Interstate 395 (I-395) Sign Structure project focuses on the replacement and repair of existing sign structures along the I-395 corridor; and on New York Avenue NE, east of Bladensburg Road NE. This includes the corridor-wide furnishing and installation of overhead traffic guide signs (sign mounting structures and panels), electrical systems, and lighting fixtures. There will also be the removal of existing overhead signs, sign structures, and electrical systems. The project will provide corridor wide improvements to the guide signing and lighting on I-3between the 12^th Street Expressway and D Street SW.

 

Traffic controls will be in place to guide all users of the roadway through the work zones safely. Motorists should expect delays due to the lane closures and are advised to stay alert and be observant of signage and road work crews while traveling in this area.
