DDOT Traffic Advisory: Temporary Lane Closures for I-395 Sign Structure Improvement Project from May 10 through May 15, 2021

Temporary Lane Closures for I-395 Sign Structure Improvement Project from May 10 through May 15, 2021

(Washington, DC)—The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will temporarily close lanes, ramps and shoulders on the following roadways to perform construction activities along I-395 and I-695 for the replacement of signage and sign structures. Work is scheduled to take place starting Monday, May 10 through Saturday, May 15, 2021, weather permitting.

These closure dates and times are contingent on suitable weather, field conditions, and/or adjacent construction activities. The following are the lane and shoulder closures that will be in place during the following days and time-periods.

Weekdays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.:

Single Left Lane Closure on the ramp from I-395 Northbound to Center Leg Freeway.
Single Left Lane Closure on Center Leg Freeway Southbound south of the 3^rd Street Tunnel.
Single Right Lane Closure on I-395 Northbound between 7^th Street SW and Center Leg Freeway.
Single and Double Left Lane Closures in both directions on New York Avenue NE from West Virginia Avenue NE to east of Bladensburg Avenue NE. (starting at 9:30 a.m.)
Single and Double Left Lane Closures on the ramp from I-395 Southbound to Maine Avenue SW.
Full closure of the ramps from C Street SW and Washington Avenue SW to I-695 Eastbound.
Full closure of the ramp from I-395 Northbound to C Street SW.

Weeknights from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. the following morning:

Double Left Lane Closures in both directions on New York Avenue NE from West Virginia Avenue NE to east of Bladensburg Avenue NE.

Friday Night, May 14, 2021 from 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. the following morning:

Full closures of the ramps from 9th Street Expressway, 7^th Street SW, and Maine Avenue SW to I-395 Northbound/I-695 Eastbound. Starting at 8:00 p.m.
Double Left Lane Closures on I-395 Southbound between South Capitol Street and Center Leg Freeway. Starting at 8:00 p.m.
Double Left Lane Closures on I-395 Northbound between Maine Avenue SW and Center Leg Freeway. Starting at 9:00 p.m.
Triple Left Lane Closures on I-395 Northbound between Maine Avenue SW and Center Leg Freeway. Starting at 10:00 p.m.
Intermittent 30-minute full stoppages on I-395 Northbound between Maine Avenue SW and Center Leg Freeway. Starting at 11:00 p.m.

Saturday, May 15, 2021 from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.:

Single Left Lane Closure on the ramp from I-395 Northbound to Center Leg Freeway.
Single Left Lane Closure on Center Leg Freeway Southbound south of the 3^rd Street Tunnel.
Single Right Lane Closure on I-395 Northbound between 7^th Street SW and Center Leg Freeway.
Full closure of the ramps from C Street SW and Washington Avenue SW to I-695 Eastbound.
Full closure of the ramp from I-395 Northbound to C Street SW.

For the C Street SW and Washington Avenue SW ramp closures, vehicles will be detoured using Independence Avenue SW, 9^th Street Expressway, and I-395 Northbound. If access to Independence Avenue is prohibited due to security measures, vehicles will be detoured using 2^nd Street SW, I-395 Southbound, 7^th Street SW, and I-395 Northbound.

Detour: C Street SW and Washington Ave SW Ramps to I-695 Eastbound

For the closure of the C Street SW ramp from I-395 Northbound, vehicles will be detoured using I-695 Eastbound, South Capitol Street SE/SW (U-turning at M Street SE/SW), and Washington Avenue SW.

Detour: I-395 Northbound Ramp to C Street SW

For the closure of the I -395 Northbound access ramps from the 9^th Street Expressway, 7^th Street SW, and Maine Avenue SW, vehicles will be detoured to Maine Avenue SW to access I-395 Northbound via South Capitol Street and I-695 Eastbound via Washington Avenue SW.

These closures are required for construction activities associated with the following DDOT project:

Interstate 395 Sign Structure Improvement Project

The Interstate 395 (I-395) Sign Structure project focuses on the replacement and repair of existing sign structures along the I-395 corridor. This includes the corridor-wide furnishing and installation of overhead traffic guide signs (sign mounting structures and panels), electrical systems, and lighting fixtures. There will also be the removal of existing overhead signs, sign structures, and electrical systems. The project will provide corridor-wide improvements to the guide signing and lighting between the 12^th Street Expressway and D Street, SW.

Motorists are urged to use caution as they travel in these areas, to anticipate moderate delays, and to be mindful of construction personnel.
