DDOT Traffic Advisory: Temporary Lane Closures for I-395 Sign Structure Improvement Project from March 29 through April 3, 2021

Temporary Lane Closures for I-395 Sign Structure Improvement Project from March 29 through April 3, 2021

(Washington, DC)—The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will temporarily close lanes, ramps and shoulders on the following roadways to perform construction activities along I-395 and I-695 for the replacement of signage and sign structures beginning March 29 through April 3, 2021, weather permitting.

These closure dates and times are contingent on suitable weather, field conditions, and/or adjacent construction activities. Notable delays should be expected around the project areas and motorists are advised to use alternative routes, if possible.

The following are the lane and shoulder closures that will be in place during the following days and time-periods.

Weekdays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and weeknights from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.:

Single Left or Right Lane Closure on I-395 Northbound between 7^th Street SW and Center Leg Freeway.
Single Left Lane Closure on the ramp from I-395 Northbound to Center Leg Freeway. (days only).
Single Left Lane Closure on Center Leg Freeway Southbound south of the 3^rd Street Tunnel. (days only).
Single Right Lane Closure on I-395 Southbound between 7^th Street SW and Maine Avenue SW (days only).
Single Left Lane Closure on I-395 Southbound between Center Leg Freeway and 7^th Street SW (days only).
Double Left Lane Closure on the ramp from I-395 Southbound to Maine Avenue SW (nights only).
Full closure of the ramps from C Street SW and Washington Avenue SW to I-695 Eastbound (days only).
Full closure of the ramp from I-395 Northbound to C Street SW (days only).

Monday night, March 29^th from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. for overhead structure erection/removal:

Single Right Lane Closure on I-395 Southbound between Center Leg Freeway and Maine Avenue SW. Starting at 7:00 p.m.
Double Left Lane Closures on I-395 Southbound between Center Leg Freeway and Maine Avenue SW. Starting at 8:00 p.m.
Full closure of the ramp from 9^th Street Expressway to I-395 Northbound/I-695 Eastbound. Starting at 8:00 p.m.
Triple Left Lane Closures on I-395 Southbound between Center Leg Freeway and Maine Avenue SW. Starting at 9:00 p.m.
Intermittent 30-minute full stoppages on I-395 Southbound between Center Leg Freeway and Maine Avenue SW. Starting at 10:00 p.m.
Note: The back-up date for these Monday night closures is Friday night, April 2^nd, 2021 with single lane closures starting at 8:00 p.m., and full stoppages ending by 8:00 a.m., Saturday, April 3^rd, 2021.

Saturday, April 3^rd from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.:

Single Left Lane Closure on Center Leg Freeway Southbound south of the 3^rd Street Tunnel.
Single Left Lane Closure on the ramp from I-395 Northbound to Center Leg Freeway.
Single Right Lane Closure on I-395 Northbound between 7^th Street SW and Center Leg Freeway.
Full closure of the ramps from C Street SW and Washington Avenue SW to I-695 Eastbound.
Full closure of the ramp from I-395 Northbound to C Street SW.

For the C Street SW and Washington Avenue SW ramp closures, vehicles will be detoured using Independence Avenue SW, 9^th Street Expressway, and I-395 Northbound as indicated in the map below. If access to Independence Avenue is prohibited due to security measures, vehicles will be detoured using 2^nd Street SW, I-395 Southbound, 7^th Street SW, and I-395 Northbound.

Detour: C Street SW and Washington Ave SW Ramps to I-695 Eastbound

For the closure of the ramp from the 9^th Street Expressway to I-395 Northbound/I-695 Eastbound, vehicles will be detoured using the 9^th Street Expressway, Maine Avenue SW, and 7^th Street SW.

Detour: 9^th Street Expressway Ramp to I-395 Northbound/I-695 Eastbound

For the closure of the C Street SW ramp from I-395 Northbound, vehicles will be detoured using I-695 Eastbound, South Capitol Street SE/SW (U-turning at M Street SE/SW), and Washington Avenue SW.

These closures are required for construction activities associated with the following DDOT project:

Interstate 395 Sign Structure Improvement Project

The Interstate 395 (I-395) Sign Structure project focuses on the replacement and repair of existing sign structures along the I-395 corridor. This includes the corridor-wide furnishing and installation of overhead traffic guide signs (sign mounting structures and panels), electrical systems, and lighting fixtures. There will also be the removal of existing overhead signs, sign structures, and electrical systems. The project will provide corridor-wide improvements to the guide signing and lighting between the 12^th Street Expressway and D Street, SW.

Motorists are urged to use caution as they travel in these areas, to anticipate moderate delays, and to be mindful of construction personnel.
