(Washington, DC)—The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) issued a Notice to Proceed (NTP) for the Pennsylvania Avenue SE Streetlight Upgrade Project. The project limits extend from 2nd Street SE to 14th Street SE.

Temporary lane closures are expected to begin starting on or about April 5, 2021 during off-peak hours, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Construction activities will begin at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and 2nd Street SE and will proceed on both the eastbound and westbound sides of the Avenue. Each segment is estimated to take three to six weeks. Construction is limited to a maximum of two blocks. Parking is prohibited in the work zone and safe accommodations for pedestrians and cyclists will be enforced.

Pedestrian sidewalks, crosswalks and access to buildings and businesses along the project corridor will be maintained at all times. Traffic controls and signage will be in place to safely guide all motorist through the work zone. Motorists are urged to use caution when traveling through the work zone, to anticipate moderate delays and to be mindful of pedestrians, cyclists and construction personnel.

The completed project will improve roadway lighting and traffic signals, creating a safer environment for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists, as well as improve bus operation and local business foot traffic along the project corridor. Project highlights include the installation of Cobra head lighting fixtures and pendant post, LED luminaires, enhanced lighting distribution and improved roadway safety, upgraded traffic signals and ADA compliant intersections. This project will implement DDOT and AASHTO streetlight policy guidelines.
