DDOT TRAFFIC ADVISORY: DDOT Begins 16th Street NW Bus Lanes Project  

 

(Washington, DC)—The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is advising all stakeholders on 16^th Street NW from Arkansas Ave NW to H Street NW, that the 16^th Street NW Bus Lanes project is now underway; all work is weather permitting. This project is anticipated to take a full year to complete.

 

DDOT advises all users in this area to expect intermittent closing of travel lanes on northbound and southbound 16^th Street NW during the off-peak hours of 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with Saturday work under special circumstances and advance notice.

 

No long-term lane closures are anticipated during construction for this project. Roadway users should expect short interruptions to two-way traffic. Travel lanes will be tapered as necessary to allow for the safe channelizing of traffic. Temporary sidewalk closures may be required on 16^th Street NW during construction. Pedestrian channelizers, detours, and signage will be installed when these sidewalk closures are needed.

 

The first intersections to experience lane closures will be as follows:

• 16th Street NW at Arkansas Avenue NW – beginning on or about Tuesday, February 16, 2021, excavation will begin on the southeast corner of 16th Street NW and Arkansas Avenue NW. The scope of this work includes installation of cabinet and light pole bases, electrical duct bank across 16th Street NW, and light pole foundations.
• 16th Street NW at Columbia Road/Harvard Street NW – beginning on or about Thursday, February 18, 2021, pedestrian channelizers, pedestrian detours, and traffic barriers will be installed in order to begin excavation of roadway medians.
• 16th Street NW at Spring Road NW – beginning on or about Thursday, February 25, 2021, excavation will begin on the southeast corner of 16th Street NW and Spring Road NW. The scope of this work includes installation of cabinet and light pole bases, electrical duct bank across 16th Street NW, and light pole foundations.

Traffic controls, including signage, will be in place to guide motorists and pedestrians safely through the work zone. All users of the roadway are advised to stay alert and be observant of signage and work zones while traveling in this area.

Once completed, the 16^th Street NW Bus Lanes project will improve the performance and reliability of bus routes and pedestrian access along 16^th Street NW from Arkansas Avenue NW to H Street NW.
