South Capitol Street SW Traffic Shift starting January 8, 2021

(Washington, D.C.) - The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will temporarily shift southbound traffic on South Capitol Street SW to the left (just after crossing the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge) onto a new temporary roadway to bypass a new work area that will be implemented on the right side of the existing roadway.

Closures associated with this traffic shift will start at 8 pm Friday, January 8, 2021 and will continue until no later than 5 am Monday morning, January 11, 2021. To accommodate this traffic shift, northbound and southbound South Capitol Street SE/SW will have left or right single lane closures with 15-minute, intermittent full stoppages throughout the weekend.

These closures are necessary for construction activities associated with the South Capitol Street Corridor Project which includes construction of the New Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge and the reconstruction of the I-295/ Suitland Parkway interchange. Please observe the posted speed limit and proceed through the construction area with caution. Pedestrians and cyclists are advised to stay alert and follow signage when traveling through this area.
