New DFHV Rules Allow Taxis to Operate Longer |

Extending Vehicle Age and Lowering Maximum Mileage Will Help Drivers Increase Earnings |
|
(WASHINGTON, DC) – Today, the Department of For-Hire Vehicles (DFHV) is announcing implementation of rulemaking that extends the vehicle retirement age for taxis from 8 to 10 years, and allows taxicabs to stay on the road with a maximum odometer mileage of 300,000 rather than 315,000 miles. Both changes are addressing the industry’s economic challenges under the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic by allowing vehicles to operate longer, thus providing more opportunities for taxi drivers to increase earnings.
“DFHV remains committed to overseeing a robust transportation ecosystem to meet the needs of our residents and visitors to have safe and reliable options to for-hire ride services—and support the economic needs of taxi drivers,” said DFHV Director David Do. “DFHV has been working closely with the industry during the public health emergency to assist and provide relief to taxi drivers – whose income has been decimated due to the ongoing pandemic – and I am happy to announce that this relief from cab mileage and age requirements is coming.”
The changes were made through amendments, published in the December 4, 2020 D.C. Register, to Chapter 6 of Title 31, Section 609. The rules, which can be viewed here, make corresponding adjustments to the requirements to enter taxicabs into service.
