 Temporary Lane Closures in the I-295 Corridor from December 7 through December 13, 2020

 

(Washington, DC) - The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will temporarily close lanes, ramps and shoulders on the following roadways to perform construction activities along and near the I-295 / DC 295 corridor. The start of these lane, ramp, and shoulder closures is contingent on suitable weather, field conditions, and/or adjacent construction activities.

 

Full closures (both directions) with detours are planned for the following roadways:

  • Suitland Parkway, SE from Firth Sterling Avenue, SE to South Capitol Street, SE is planned to be closed from 8:00 pm, Friday, 12/11 to 5:00 am, Monday, 12/14/20
  • Howard Road, SE from Firth Sterling Avenue, SE to the WMATA Access is planned to be closed nightly from 8:00 pm to 6:00 am (next day), Monday, 12/7 through Monday morning 12/14/20

Closures are planned on I-295 between Exit 1 (Laboratory Road / US Naval Research Lab) and I-695 are planned from Monday, 12/7 through Monday morning, 12/14/20 for the following:

  • I-295 Northbound and I-295 Southbound are planned to have single right or left lane closures anytime.
  • I-295 Northbound and I-295 Southbound are planned to have up to two left or right lanes closed nightly from 8:00 pm to 5:00 am (next day) and nightly from 8:00 pm to 6:00 am (next day), respectively.

Closures are planned for the following ramps daily from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm, and nightly from 8:00 pm to 5:00 am (next day) from Monday, 12/7 through Monday morning, 12/14/20:

  • Exit 3B from I-295 northbound (South Capitol Street / Nationals Park / Downtown)
  • Exit 4 from I-295 southbound (South Capitol Street / Suitland Parkway)
  • Ramp from Firth Sterling Avenue, SE to I-295 Northbound
  • Ramp from MLK Jr. Avenue to I-295 Northbound (closed continuously through 12/12/20)

Single left or right lane closures are planned on South Capitol Street, SE/SW, and Suitland Parkway, SE daily from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm and nightly from 6:30 pm to 6:00 am (next day) between Monday, 12/7 and Monday morning, 12/14/20. Daily double left or right lane closures are planned nightly from 8:00 pm to 5:00 am (next day).

Single left or right lane closures are also planned anytime along Firth Sterling Avenue, SE, Potomac Avenue, SE/SW, Half Street, SW, Howard Road, SE, Barry Road, SE, St. Elizabeths Avenue, SE, Malcolm X Avenue, SE, and South Capitol Street, SE/SW. Please expect delays when traveling these corridors.

 

These closures are required for construction activities associated with the following DDOT projects:

 

South Capitol Street Corridor Project - Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge

The South Capitol Street Corridor Project calls for replacing the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge and transforming related sections of the urban freeway into a beautiful scenic boulevard that increases pedestrian and vehicular safety, improves multimodal transportation options, increases community accessibility and supports economic development on both sides of the Anacostia River.

 

I-295 / Malcolm X Avenue SE Interchange Improvement Project

The multiple phases of this project include the reconstruction of the I-295 interchange with Malcolm X Avenue SE, including modified ramps and a new access roadway to the St. Elizabeth’s West Campus. The planned improvements will be made between Firth Sterling Avenue SE, on the north, and the South Capitol Street/Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue SE intersection to the south. The project will provide transportation improvements to serve the proposed Department of Homeland Security headquarters consolidation on the St. Elizabeth’s West Campus.
