Temporary Lane Shift on South Capitol Street SE/SW on November 14, 2020

(Washington, DC) - The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will temporarily shift the travel lanes on South Capitol St., SW, Potomac Ave., SW, and O St., SW on or about November 14th through November 15th, 2020, as shown in the following graphic.

The rightmost southbound lane on South Capitol St., SW prior to O St., SW will become a designated “RIGHT TURN ONLY” lane. The remaining two through lanes will continue southbound to the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge (FDMB) and other areas. Truck traffic travelling southbound on South Capitol St., SW to Buzzard Point, Fort McNair, Audi Field and other adjacent areas should access these areas via Potomac Avenue, SW.

For drivers on northbound South Capitol St., SE, the three travel lanes will shift to the left through the intersection with Potomac Avenue SE but will remain open. Neither the northbound or southbound directions will be fully closed for an extended period during this operation. However, brief intermittent stoppages may occur.

This closure is a result of the reconstruction of the I-295/ Suitland Parkway interchange associated with the South Capitol Street Corridor Project which includes construction of the New Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge.
