Temporary Lane and Ramp Closures on I-395/I-695
(Washington, DC) — The District Department of Transportation (DDOT)
will temporarily close lanes and shoulders on the following roadways to perform construction activities along I-395 for sign structure replacements. Due to the dynamic nature of construction projects, the start of these lane, ramp, and shoulder closures may be delayed or postponed based on weather, field conditions, and/or other construction activities. The following represents the geographic and timeframe limits of these planned activities.
The following lane and shoulder closures will be in place during the day from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday, August 24th through Friday, August 28th, 2020, weather permitting.
I-395 Southbound Access Roadway
- Single left lane between the 9th Street Expressway and 12th Street Expressway
The following lane and shoulder closures will be in place overnight from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM, Monday, August 24th through Friday, August 28th, 2020, weather permitting.
I-395 Southbound Access Roadway
- Single left or right lane between the 9th Street Expressway and 12th Street Expressway
The following lane and shoulder closures will be in place overnight from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM, Monday, August 24th through Friday, August 28th, 2020, weather permitting.
I-395 Southbound Mainline
- Single right lane between the 9th Street Expressway and 12th Street Expressway
- Single right lane between Center Leg Freeway and 11th Street SE
I-395 Southbound Access Roadway
- Double left lane between 9th Street Expressway and 12th Street Expressway
The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will also temporarily close the ramp from the 9th Street Expressway to I-395 Southbound to perform construction activities along I-395 for future sign structure replacements during the week of August 24th, 2020. These closures and detours will take place during the day from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM and/or overnight from 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM.
Vehicles will be detoured for the ramp closure using D Street SW, 7th Street SW, 9th Street SW, and Maine Avenue SW, as indicated in the map below. Notable delays should be expected around the project area and motorists are advised to use an alternative route, if possible.
Detour: 9th Street Expressway Ramp to I-395 SB

Lastly, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will also temporarily close the ramps from northbound South Capitol Street and I-695 Westbound to I-395 Northbound (i.e., Center Leg Freeway) to perform sign panel replacements during the week of August 24th, 2020. Preparation for these closures and detours will begin at 10:00 PM and transition to full closure at 12:00 AM (midnight), lasting until 5:00 AM the following morning.
Vehicles will be detoured for the ramp closures using I-695 Westbound and 7th Street SW and back to I-395 Northbound (i.e., Center Leg Freeway) as indicated in the map below. Notable delays should be expected around the project area and motorists are advised to use an alternative route, if possible.

These closures are required for construction activities associated with the following DDOT projects:
Interstate 395 Sign Structure Improvement Project
The Interstate 395 (I-395) Sign Structure project focuses on the replacement and repair of existing sign structures along the I-395 corridor. This includes the corridor-wide furnishing and installation of overhead traffic guide signs (sign mounting structures and panels), electrical systems, and lighting fixtures. There will also be the removal of existing overhead signs, sign structures, and electrical systems. The project will provide corridor wide improvements to the guide signing and lighting between the 12th Street Expressway and D Street, SW.
Motorists are urged to use caution as they travel in these areas, to anticipate moderate delays, and to be mindful of construction personnel.
