Temporary Lane Closure on Maryland Ave NE

(Washington, DC) - As part of the Maryland Avenue NE Streetscape Project, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will continue daily lane closures on the outbound and inbound lanes at multiple locations on Maryland Ave NE between 2nd Street and 14th Street until June 13, 2020, weather permitting.

These lanes will be closed on Monday through Friday and sometimes Saturday, from 8:00am to 5:00pm, weather and construction conditions permitting. At all times there will be at least one lane available to maintain traffic flow on both the inbound and outbound lanes.

The lane closures are needed to install utility work and infrastructure for stormwater management along the median as well as underground utilities for streetlights and traffic signals. In addition, lane closures are needed for Washington Gas to install underground utilities.

Traffic control signs will be in place to guide travelers in the corridor through the new traffic pattern.  Motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists are urged to stay alert and use caution when traveling by the work zone. The District Department of Transportation encourages motorists to slow down in the work zone for the safety of workers and pedestrians. Pay special attention to uneven surfaces in the corridor.

The Maryland Avenue NE Streetscape Project will improve safety and access for bikes, pedestrians, and cars on the corridor between 2nd Street and 14th Street NE. The project includes new lighting, traffic signals, high visibility crosswalks, traffic calming measures, shorter crossing distances for pedestrians, and new bike lanes. DDOT anticipates the project will be complete by Summer 2021.
