Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

Earlier this week, with the new school year just around the corner, I was proud to announce that for the fourth consecutive year, students in our public schools made progress on the PARCC assessment

We’re proud of our students and educators for continuing to achieve at higher levels. But with the latest results in hand, we are also going into this new school year with a renewed sense of urgency to ensure all students are making gains at a pace that will set them up for success both inside and outside the classroom.

I joined education leaders and teachers to announce our PARCC results at the Whittier Education Campus in Ward 4. Whittier is a school that made double-digit gains in both math and reading and across student populations - double-digit gains with African American students, Latino students, and students with disabilities. Going forward, we will be looking closely at what schools like Whittier are doing to help their students achieve at higher levels. We are also going to be introducing new systems to support our educators and sending more resources into the school communities that need them most, including our ten new Connected Schools.

New school years are exciting because they represent new opportunities for our students and educators. As young people across DC return to school on Monday, let's all - whether we have children in school or not - commit to finding a way to help make every day count.

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowser

DC Government Will Help You Pay for a Green Roof

Go Green

Did you know that the Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE) will help you pay for a new green roof? Green roofs benefit the environment and provide cost savings by improving building efficiency and lowering your utility costs.

All building types - of any size - are eligible to apply. Green roofs help manage harmful stormwater and they keep DC cooler. They also play a strategic role in our ongoing efforts to meet the goal of becoming a carbon neutral and climate resilient city by 2050. Learn more about how you can be part of the solution HERE
