Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

Summer is winding down and before we know it, the first day of school will be here. That said, I want to once again urge parents to ensure your child is up-to-date on all mandatory vaccines. Vaccines are safe and effective and immunizations are the single most important way to protect our community against serious and sometimes deadly diseases. Health centers in all eight wards are offering free immunizations for children and teens. Find a health center near you HERE

Also, if your child takes the bus or train to school, know that this year, new Kids Ride Free cards will be sent directly to all DC Public and DC Public Charter Schools for distribution starting August 26, 2019. Your child’s School Year 2018-2019 card (last year’s card) is valid until September 30, 2019. New cards will be provided to students by their school’s DC One Card Administrator before their current card expires.

We have a lot to look forward to this school year. We are opening two new DC Public Schools (DCPS) - Ida B. Wells Middle School in Ward 4 and Bard High School Early College DC in Ward 7. Many students and staff will return to new and modernized buildings (I hope you will join us at ribbon cuttings for Hyde-Addison, Coolidge, and Ida B. Wells). Next June, Ron Brown College Preparatory High School will graduate its first class of seniors. And this school year, we are making big investments in technology to equip every student at DCPS in grades 3, 6, and 9 with their own laptop or device.

This school year is another opportunity to make every day count and, together, I look forward to getting a strong start to the 2019-2020 school year.
