Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

Tomorrow, Washington, DC will join cities and towns across the nation in recognizing National Gun Violence Awareness Day. We will mourn the nearly 40,000 lives lost to gun violence every year, including the 48 people who have died from gun violence in our city in 2019.

When we look at the data around gun violence, the numbers are devastating. And what we must never forget is that behind every number is a real person, and behind every victim is a network of family and friends who are left heartbroken and traumatized.

Yesterday, I was in the tragic position of needing to call on our community to help us solve the murder of 15-year-old Maurice Scott. Maurice was a son and a brother and a beloved student and classmate. Not only did the person who shot and killed Maurice steal his life and future, they have inflicted trauma on an entire family and community, and they must be brought to justice.

We will never accept gun violence as normal. We will never accept children being shot while they are playing outside or walking to the corner store as normal. As we continue calling on the federal government to implement common-sense gun control, we must work together as a community to treat the trauma that violent crime creates, end cycles of violence, and hold the perpetrators of violent crime responsible.

If you have information about a crime in our community or know about an illegal gun in your home or neighborhood, we urge you to contact MPD's anonymous tip line by calling (202) 727-9099 or by texting 50411.

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowser

New Bus Lanes in Downtown DC

Bus Lanes

Last week, Mayor Bowser launched a pilot project to test the impact of high-visibility, bus-only lanes along H and I Streets, NW during peak rush hours. The pilot started on Monday, June 3 and will continue through September 27.

The lanes will function as dedicated bus lanes during the morning rush hour between 7:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. and the evening rush hour between 4:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. The temporary bus lanes will operate in the right curb lane on H Street between 18th Street and 14th Street NW and along I Street NW between 13th Street NW and 20th Street NW. While the District Department of Transportation has marked the lanes with red paint, pavement markings, and signage, the Department of Public Works and the Metropolitan Police Department will work together to keep the lanes free of other vehicles during the designated times.
