OAA and Omega Gospel Mission Church to Host Immigration Workshop
In line with Mayor Vincent C. Gray's priority of public safety and as a direct follow-up to OAA's " One City, Safe City" Public Safety Forum- the DC Mayor’s Office on African Affairs is partnering with Omega Gospel Mission Church, Immigration Lawyer Loide George, and USCIS to host a two-part workshop series on “US Immigration & Legal Status”.
The first workshop will be held on Sunday, January 22nd from 1pm to 2:30pm at the Omega Gospel Mission Church on 6210 Chillum PL, NW, Washington, DC 20011.
Loide George and USCIS will present critical information you should know about obtaining legal status and accessing quality legal advice.
Join us for this important discussion, which will be followed by a Q&A, and bring your questions as well as friends and family members who are pursuing legal status.

Office on African Affairs Internship Opportunities
OAA’s Internship Program offers a wide variety of work opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as young professionals who are seeking to engage in public service and serve the District’s diverse African communities. Each year, OAA recruits dynamic interns who represent the diversity of its constituent base to support the work of the agency. At OAA, interns have an opportunity to be involved in many aspects of the agency’s day-to-day work, participate in the implementation of program activities, and provide support to the staff. As such, OAA interns share responsibilities for administrative tasks - beyond their unique work areas - to keep the office running smoothly and to ensure quality program support.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – On December 29, 2011, Mayor Vincent C. Gray, Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice Paul Quander and Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier announced a plan to improve the delivery of police services in the District of Columbia and highlighted crime-fighting successes from 2011 – including a significant decrease in murders compared to the same period last year.
Mayor Gray Welcomes Extra 42 Million Dollars in Fiscal Year 2012 Revenues
(WASHINGTON, DC) – On December 23, 2011, Mayor Vincent C. Gray welcomed news from District Chief Financial Officer Dr. Natwar Gandhi that projected revenue for fiscal year 2012 has increased by $42.2 million over initial estimates. He will request the DC Council approve a supplemental 2012 budget that will eliminate a corresponding amount of spending pressures in several critical areas.

$1 Million Fund
for News Innovation
The African Media Initiative (AMI), the continent's largest association of media owners and operators, has announced a $1 million fund to spur innovation in the news industry.
The new African News Innovation Challenge (ANIC) is designed to encourage experimentation in digital technologies and support the best innovations that strengthen African news organizations.
AMI chief executive Amadou Mahtar Ba first announced the fund at the 4th African Media Leaders Forum in Tunisia on November 10. This week, Ba confirmed that Omidyar Network, Google, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, and the U.S. Department of State have all pledged either funding or technical support for the initiative.

DC Nonprofit Code and Nonprofit Governance Workshop
The New DC Nonprofit Code and Nonprofit Governance. Senegal: World Summit of Mayors From Africa and the Diaspora Focuses on HIV in Urban Areas
More than 250 mayors from sub-Saharan Africa and of African descent from the United States, the Caribbean and Latin America focused on strengthening the AIDS response in urban areas during an historic conference held in Dakar, Senegal from 15-19 December.
The 2011 World Summit of Mayors Leadership Conference was hosted by Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade and co-organized by the US-based National Conference of Black Mayors (NCBM), the National Association of Senegalese Mayors, and UNAIDS.
Zimbabwe: Local Students Flock to
U.S.A
Zimbabwe is one of the African countries that has a large segment of its
student population studying in the United States of America, an international
education report shows.
According to Open Doors 2011, the annual report on international academic
mobility published by the Institute of International Education (IIE) with
support from the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States
Department of State, Zimbabwe sent 94 students per one million citizens to study
in the US in 2010-2011.
Can Diaspora Bonds Help Meet Development Goals?
Diaspora remittances are a key foreign exchange earner for Africa with US$40-billion flowing from the west annually.
That figure is growing at 15% per year, according to the chief executive officer of Homestrings, Eric Vincent Guichard.
Founded last year, Homestrings provides investors from the African diaspora and elsewhere the means to invest on the continent by providing direct access to institutional private equity funds, projects and public private partnerships.

Financial Analyst, West & Central Africa
Population Services International (PSI) seeks applicants for the position of Financial Analyst supporting the West and Central Africa region. Fulbright Public Policy Fellowship
Recently
the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs announced the creation of the The Fulbright Public Policy Fellowship, a new
component of the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. The Fulbright Public Policy
Fellowship will allow U.S. citizens to contribute to the strengthening
of the public sector abroad by serving in professional placements within
foreign government ministries or institutions while simultaneously carrying out
an academic research/study project.
Fulbright Public Policy Fellowships will be offered in
Bangladesh, Cote d’Ivoire, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Haiti, Jamaica,
Mongolia, Nepal, Nigeria, Thailand, and Tunisia. U.S. Embassies,
Fulbright Commissions (where applicable), and host country governments will
coordinate appropriate professional placements for candidates in public policy
areas including, but not limited to, public health, education, agriculture,
justice, energy, environment, public finance, economic development, information
technology, and communications.
Candidates must be in receipt of a
master's or J.D. degree by the beginning of the Fellowship (Summer/Fall 2012)
or be currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program. Applicants must also have at
least two years of work experience applicable to public policy-related fields
and must demonstrate proficiency in the language of the host country.
Applications are due on February 1, 2012.
The Women in Public Service Project
Wellesley College in Massachusetts will host the first Women in Public Service Project Institute for two weeks, June 11-22. The pilot institute will bring together 50 emerging women leaders from across the globe between the ages of 25-45 who are already serving in different fields of public service and/or political or elected office.
The institute hopes to provide a forum for shared learning and dialogue; exchange of experiences and expertise; peer-to-peer mentoring and networking; and build an important platform for cross-fertilization of knowledge and innovative leadership skills.

Tutors Needed at Thurgood Marshall Academy
Thurgood Marshall Academy is seeking volunteers to offer homework help in the school library each day from 3:30 until 6:00 p.m. As many as 60 to 70 students come to the library every afternoon in search of a quiet place and a few essential resources. We’d like you to be there for them. TMA also offers one-on-one tutoring for students in need of more intensive academic assistance. Through this program, volunteers are matched with students and meet individually with their assigned pupil in a room on the TMA campus.
