Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

Earlier this week, I joined students, community members, and District leaders at Garfield Elementary for a slow down campaign. The Garfield community has worked diligently with DC Government to improve traffic safety near their school, and on Tuesday, we came together to celebrate their commitment and to draw attention to our ongoing, District-wide Vision Zero efforts.

After the event, Principal Branch noted:

I know today’s event was one of many ongoing steps in the right direction for School Safety and Vision Zero, but if only for a moment, it felt we won the battle in our commitment to eliminate transportation-related accidents and fatalities.

Standing together as a community to call attention to such an important issue was truly an inspiring and remarkable way to spend a Tuesday afternoon—a reminder that when we work together, we can build safer roads and communities.

This week, we announced that the District Department of Transportation is in the midst of rolling out new road features that will help us build safer roads and sidewalks across the city. Later today, I will join our new DPW Bike Force to kick off a multi-day ticket blitz. As our city and transportation options have changed over the years, so have the conditions on our roadways. We need everybody to be paying attention, understand that we all have to share the roadway, and recognize that speed and inattention kill.

Together, we can - in the words of Principal Branch - win the battle against transportation-related accidents and fatalities.

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowser

Mayor Bowser Announces Job Training Partnership with Ford Motor Company’s Autonomous Vehicle Program

Ford Partnership

This week, Mayor Bowser and Sherif Marakby, CEO of Ford Autonomous Vehicles LLC, announced a new partnership between Ford and the DC Infrastructure Academy to train DC residents for jobs and careers in the autonomous vehicle (AV) industry. In February, the Bowser Administration announced efforts to explore an AV program by establishing the Interagency AV Working Group, proactively preparing the District for AV technologies and working to ensure that advances benefit District residents and visitors. In announcing that they had chosen Washington, DC as their second city to set up a self-driving business, Ford highlighted the District’s commitment to safety and equity.

Through the partnership with the DC Infrastructure Academy, Ford and Argo AI, an artificial intelligence company, will train District residents for jobs in testing and operating autonomous vehicles. Vehicle operators will learn about the underlying technology and provide detailed feedback to engineering teams on vehicle performance. Additionally, Ford will work with area dealerships, the DC Infrastructure Academy, and Excel Automotive to prepare DC residents for in-demand auto technician jobs.

DC’s First Office of Nightlife and Culture

Nightlife and Culture

On Thursday, October 18, Mayor Bowser signed the “Office and Commission of Nightlife Establishment Act of 2017,” establishing the District’s first Office of Nightlife and Culture. The new office will promote efficiencies for the District's after-hours economy by serving as a central point of contact between DC Government, the nightlife industry, and District residents.

Washington, DC has one of the strongest local economies in the nation, and the city’s nightlife industry is a key component of the overall economy. With the creation of the Office of Nightlife and Culture, Washington, DC joins more than 30 major cities in the United States and around the world – including New York City, Berlin, Paris, London, and Amsterdam – that have established similar entities to manage their after-hours industries.
