2018 Regional Mental Health Summit
 On September, 18, 2018, The Mayor's Office of Veterans Affairs, the Washington D.C. VA Medical Center, and Serving Together hosted the 2018 Veterans Affairs Regional Mental Health Summit. We heard from several experts, regional partners, and service providers. This is our second year hosting the summit, and we look forward to another great year of bringing our community together to help veterans, family members, survivors, and military caregivers.
 On September 26, 2018, The Mayor's Office of Veterans Affairs was on hand to support The Elizabeth Dole Foundation and Comcast as they rolled out a new low-cost internet program for veterans.

PTS Awareness Special Live Taping
 On October 12, 2018, The Mayor's Office of Veterans Affairs and the Office of Cable Television, Film, Music and Entertainment filmed the final pieces of our PTS Awareness Special in front of a live studio audience!  The Mayor’s Office on Veterans Affairs ("MOVA") is launching a pilot transportation program for District of Columbia veterans with the Department of For-Hire Vehicles. Program eligibility is restricted to veteran residents of Washington DC with an annual income of less than $30,000. Documentation evidencing eligibility may be requested by MOVA. The purpose of this program is to ensure that this population has access to the medical, educational, employment and other opportunities that they require.
Program participants may only use Program rides for the following:

Employment opportunities: limited to job interviews, job fairs, recruitment events, and other similar opportunities, and does not include commuting to and from work

Educational opportunities: limited to college courses, college prep courses, GED courses, apprenticeship programs, and other professional licensure courses

Medical treatment and/or similar appointments
To register for VetsRide, a veteran must sign-up in person at the Mayor's Office of Veterans Affairs. Ensure you bring proof of DC residency, DD-214, NGB-22, or VA Card, and a statement of your annual income. All veterans must also have a current DCNetwork account, which can be created or updated at the Mayor's Office of Veterans Affairs.

 On Tuesday, October 30, join Mayor Bowser at the 32nd Annual 17th Street High Heel Race. The High Heel Race is one of Washington, DC's most unique and popular events. Each year, thousands of spectators flock to the event to watch drag queens show off their amazing outfits and race down 17th Street in heels.
The parade starts at 7:00 p.m. and the race, which generally lasts fewer than ten minutes, will start at 9:00 p.m.

 On Tuesday, October 9, Mayor Bowser cut the ribbon on The Horizon, the short-term family housing program in Ward 7, marking another step forward in delivering on her promise to close and replace DC General Family Shelter with dignified, service-enriched programs across all eight wards. The Horizon is the second of three short-term family housing programs opening this fall, following the opening of The Kennedy in Ward 4.
At The Horizon, families will have access to service-enriched programming that will help them stabilize and exit homelessness. The site includes 35 family units, computer labs for residents, administrative space for staff and providers, outdoor playground and recreational space, age-appropriate indoor recreation space, a homework and study lounge, and other amenities.

JOB SUMMARY
This position is located in the Department of Employment Services (DOES), Workforce Development Bureau. The mission of DOES is to foster economic development and growth in the District of Columbia by providing workforce training, linking job seekers with employers, compensating unemployed and injured workers and promoting safe and healthy workplaces.
The main purpose of this job is to administer, promote and direct the Jobs for Veterans State Grant (JVSG) program and services within the Department of Employment Services, Office of American Job Center Operations and Workforce Services; and provide guidance regarding veteran employment services and the connection with DCNetworks, District agencies and community based partners in support of the economic stability of the labor force, business, and the community.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Incumbent will be responsible for:
- Supporting the Program Manager, with oversight of the Jobs for Veterans State Grant (JVSG) planning, promoting the delivery of services needed by veterans seeking employment for all Job Service sites and/or American Job Center locations;
- Directing, coordinating, and over-seeing work through Disabled Veteran Outreach Program (DVOP) representatives, Local Veteran Employment Representatives (LVERs), subordinates and staff.
- Monitoring the programs progress for performance from all DCNetworks sites regarding the basic grants (DVOP and LVER), as well as monitoring or supervising the monitoring of special grants and initiatives related to veteran services;
- Functionally supervising the state’s JSVG program in accordance with USDOL/VETS direction and Title 38, United States Code (USC) and Public Law 1077-288 by monitoring services rendered, providing technical assistance to agencies referring qualified veterans for employment assistance.
- Program reporting on a biweekly, monthly and or quarterly basis to include federal and local reporting of veteran services and activities
- Interviews, registers and occupationally codes applicants.
- Counsels applicants to identify needs and/or problems to determine appropriate action required or referral to be made; and, when necessary, refers applicants to appropriate specialized services such as testing.
- Provides applicants with pertinent labor market information, job and/or training opportunities geared to need.
- Screens applicant files against Job Bank listings and refers qualified applicants to jobs.
- Performs verification and follow-up of referral/placement activities.
- Assists local, private and public employers, organizations and agencies throughout the District of Columbia in identifying potential to satisfy federal and local manpower requirements.
- Provides on-site counseling and other service to ensure job adjustment.
- Develops and maintains effective working relationships with public and private sector employers by telephone contact and personal visits, utilizing extensive knowledge of occupational requirements and labor market to develop job openings for specific applicants.
- May provide comprehensive employability services, including extensive counseling to applicants requiring individualized assistance on vocational, educational and/or social adjustment problems affecting their employability or satisfactory job adjustment.
- Selects and assembles Information from files, records, etc., for use in preparing recurring and non-recurring reports.
- Performs other related duties.
