Senior Zone!

On Wednesday, August 8, 2018, The Mayor's Office of Veterans Affairs joined the DC Office on Aging and the Community Preservation and Development Corporation for a Senior Zone and Spa Day in Edgewood.  We had a great time supporting our partners and providing resources to our veterans.

Affordable Housing Veterans Round Table

On Thursday, August 2, 2018, The Mayor's Office of Veterans Affairs hosted our month Veterans Round Table.  This meeting's discussion topic was on affordable housing.  We were joined by housing specialists from the DC Housing Finance Agency to talk about the Mortgage Credit Certificate.  While the Department of Housing and Community Development joined us to discuss the Housing Purchase Assistance Program. The DC Housing Authority also joined us and discussed HUD-VASH vouchers and other housing options available to veterans.

Welcome Home

On Saturday, July 28, 2018, The Mayor's Office of Veterans Affairs joined with the Washington DC VA Medical Center, the Veterans Mental Health Advisory Council, DC Law Students in Court, and several other veteran community service providers for a Welcome Home Resource Fair.  We were joined by nearly 200 veterans.  Thank you all for your service.


Veterans Forum

On Tuesday, July 24, 2018, The Mayor's Office of Veterans Affairs and the District of Columbia Mayor’s Advisory Board on Veterans Affairs, led DC’s first-ever Veterans’ Forum. With a theme of “Helping DC become an even better place for Veterans to live,” the event brought DC Veterans and Veterans Service Organizations together to identify ways DC could better help its Veterans and what changes would be needed, whether administrative, programmatic, or policy in nature.  Ms. Christine Kulumani, Legislative Counsel to Councilmember Brandon T. Todd, Chairman of the DC Council Committee on Government Operations, provided opening remarks at the Veterans’ Forum. She highlighted Councilmember Todd’s commitment to helping DC Veterans.  While Director Ross emphasized Mayor Bowser’s leadership in helping DC residents, including Veterans.

DD-214 Upgrade Clinic

On Friday, July 20, 2018, The Mayor's Office of Veterans Affairs hosted attorneys from the National Veterans Legal Services Program and Covington to provide DD-214 upgrade and medical retirement assistance.  We had a fully booked clinic and we look forward to our next legal services event.

On Wednesday, July 18, 2018, Director Ross delivered opening remarks at the National Association of State Workforce Agencies' 2018 Veterans Conference.  Over 500 people from 46 states and the District of Columbia were in attendance to share best practices to help veterans find jobs!

The Mayor’s Office on Veterans Affairs ("MOVA") is launching a pilot transportation program for District of Columbia veterans with the Department of For-Hire Vehicles. Program eligibility is restricted to veteran residents of Washington DC with an annual income of less than $30,000. Documentation evidencing eligibility may be requested by MOVA. The purpose of this program is to ensure that this population has access to the medical, educational, employment and other opportunities that they require.

Program participants may only use Program rides for the following:

  • Employment opportunities: limited to job interviews, job fairs, recruitment events, and other similar opportunities, and does not include commuting to and from work
  • Educational opportunities: limited to college courses, college prep courses, GED courses, apprenticeship programs, and other professional licensure courses
  • Medical treatment and/or similar appointments

To register for VetsRide, a veteran must sign-up in person at the Mayor's Office of Veterans Affairs Ensure you bring proof of DC residency, DD-214, NGB-22, or VA Card, and a statement of your annual income.  All veterans must also have a current DCNetwork account, which can be created or updated at the Mayor's Office of Veterans Affairs.

Maternal and Infant Health Summit

On Wednesday, September 12, Mayor Bowser will bring together mayors, leaders, and health experts from across the nation at Washington, DC's first-ever Maternal and Infant Health Summit. Together, we will focus on a critical issue that affects women, children, and families in Washington, DC and beyond: infant and maternal health.

    ASAP Comedy Bootcamp

    ASAP Comedy Bootcamp is the first stand-up comedy class for veterans, service members, and military family members in the country. Led by professional stand-up comedians, participating veterans develop their comedy writing and performing skills over the course of eight weekly classes. Upon completion, veteran comics are expected to give a five-minute performance to friends, family, and the general public.

    Vietnam Veterans Commemoration Program

    The Mayor's Office of Veterans Affairs is launching a new Vietnam Veteran recognition program.  If you are a veteran who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces at any time during the period of November 1, 1955 to May 15, 1975, regardless of location, you are eligible to receive a Vietnam Veteran Lapel Pin.

    We invite you to participate in the 2018 Veterans’ Legal Career Fair! This year, we are excited to share with you our NEW Location, NEW Format and NEW Online Resources we have added to this unique ONE DAY event!

     Date: Friday, September 21st, 2018

     Where: Ritz Carlton, Washington, D.C.

    Once again, we will match employers seeking to hire exceptional, experienced legal professionals with lawyers who have served in the U.S. military, are transitioning out of military service, or are military spouses. Our goal is to help first-rate candidates who have received unique training, skills and legal insights through their military service connect with top employers.

    In addition to attending and interviewing at the Veterans’ Legal Career Fair, you will be able to search within the veteran legal community year-round with our VLCF Online Job Board. Veterans, active military and military spouses will now be able to access participating employers active positions posted throughout the year and connect directly.

    Over the past three years, over 150 candidates and over 40 employers have participated every year. This event cannot be a success without your help. Please spread the word about this unique opportunity to your fellow military colleagues, friends, and military spouses with legal backgrounds. There is time for them to register!

    We have a number of employers registered and continue to do so. We will alert you to new registrants, so look out for announcements and check back frequently to see who will be attending and bid on them for interview slots.  There will be numerous opportunities to meet with employers at the networking reception/career fair as well. Many employers will be collecting resumes, so be prepared to bring hard copies along.
