Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

We know that one of the most effective ways to make prosperity more inclusive is to connect residents to good paying jobs and careers. That's why my Administration expanded the Mayor Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program, created Career Connections, launched the L.E.A.P Program, and built the DC Infrastructure Academy.

With these new programs and resources in place, we are doing more to reach residents in neighborhoods where the unemployment levels are the highest. We are providing second chances and building pathways to the middle class.

But we can and must do more, so this summer I told my team to be bold in thinking about how we can continue to create new opportunities that meet the needs of residents. And they delivered. With the recently launched 1,000 Opportunities Initiative, we are going to connect at least 1,000 Washingtonians to employment or job training opportunities within 90 days. We're doing this by deploying workforce ambassadors to communities hit the hardest by unemployment and violence. These ambassadors will provide training and programming at recreation centers and recruit residents to register for workforce programming.

As former President Barack Obama said this week at the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s birth: "It’s not just money that a job provides; it provides dignity and structure and a sense of place and a sense of purpose."

Learn more about how you can get involved—either by getting connected to an opportunity or helping someone else get connectedat 1kopportunitiesdc.com.

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowser
