Military And Veteran Caregiver Round Table
On Tuesday, May 22, 2018, the Mayor's Office of Veterans Affairs partnered with the Elizabeth Dole Foundation to host our first Veteran and Military Caregiver Round Table! Washington, D.C. was one of the first cities in country to sign-on and become a Hidden Heroes City. This round table was an excellent opportunity to explore how we can better serve our caregivers and share best practices. This is a program we will be hosting on a reoccurring basis - so if you missed it - there will be more opportunities to join us!
If you are a caregiver in Washington, D.C., please visit our Caregiver Resource Page. If you are in need of assistance, you can also reach us by phone at 202-724-5454.
Walter Reed Veteran Housing Ground Breaking
On Friday, May 25, 2018, the Mayor's Office of Veterans Affairs, Ward 4 Councilmember Brandon Todd, the Deputy Mayor for Economic Development, the Department of Housing and Community Development, the D.C. Housing Finance Agency, and HELP USA broke ground at the Walter Reed Campus on 77 units of permanent supportive housing for veterans. We were joined by veterans from the largest veteran transitional housing facility in the District, U.S.Vets, as well as veterans and family members from all eras. The ceremony was a historic moment, which ensures that Walter Reed's legacy of caring for our nation's veterans will be carried on as the campus enters a new era.
The 77 units to be constructed will be offered at the following affordability levels: 75 permanent supportive housing units at 30 percent Median Family Income for chronically homeless veterans and two units at 50 percent median family income. The site of the project is the former Abrams Hall (Building 14), was originally constructed in 1976 as barrack housing for soldiers receiving long-term medical care who were able to live semi-independently. HELP USA is the first of three affordable housing projects in Abrams Hall; at completion it will include a total of 211 affordable housing units for seniors and veterans.
Memorial Day Service Project
On Saturday, May 26, 2018, the Mayor's Office of Veterans Affairs teamed up with The Mission Continues, and the National Park Service for a community service project on the National Mall. Together, we cleaned the D.C. War Memorial, which is the only District memorial on the National Mall and the only memorial dedicated specifically to District Veterans.
The D.C. War Memorial is dedicated to those who gave their lives during World War I. The memorial's inscription reads:
"The names of the men and women from the District of Columbia who gave their lives in the World War are here inscribed as a perpetual record of their patriotic service to their country. Those who fell and those who survived have given to this and to future generations an example of high idealism courageous sacrifice and gallant achievement"
On Wednesday, May 30, 2018, Director Ely S. Ross delivered opening remarks at the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans. It was an excellent opportunity to discuss the success we have had as a city in combating veteran homelessness. Some highlights from the speech include:
- Mayor Muriel Bowser has committed $100 million
annually to the Housing Production Trust Fund each year of her administration –
more than any city per capita in the country.
- Since taking office, the
Administration has increased investments in permanent housing programs by
nearly 62 percent and connected more than 3,300 single adults to permanent
housing, including more than 1,900 veterans.
- Since 2014, we have seen a
25% decrease in homelessness amongst veterans.
We are committed to making homelessness rare,
brief, and non-reoccurring across all segments of our population. If you are, or know, a veteran in need. Please call our office at 202-724-5454.

Letter
from the Mayor
Dear Washingtonians,
Coming into office, I charged my team
with finding new ways to make Washington, DC more affordable for people of all
backgrounds. From changing the way our workforce programs train and connect DC
residents to DC jobs to putting homeownership in reach for more Washingtonians,
we approached the work with the understanding that, for many residents, there
is not just one pathway to the middle class. From day one, we committed to
taking a broad approach to expanding economic opportunity.
Three and a half years later, with work
still left to do, we have come a long way. By investing $100 million in four
consecutive budgets in our Housing Production Trust Fund, we've set a new bar
when it comes to investing in affordable housing—we've changed expectations,
set a new standard, and shown what is possible when a city not only invests in
affordable housing, but works diligently to get the money out the door. With
the help of the Housing Production Trust Fund, we have already sparked the
creation or preservation of more than 10,800 affordable units, with more than
5,100 units in preconstruction.
And we're not slowing down. Yesterday,
we announced a $103 million investment in nine projects
that will create or preserve affordable housing for more than 1,700
Washingtonians. The projects—four new production projects, three
preservation projects, and two mixed projects that preserve existing units and
also add new affordable units—will serve households making no more than 80
percent of the Median Family Income (MFI), and nearly two-thirds of the units
will be dedicated toward households below 50 percent MFI.
Washington, DC is the best city in the
world. Together, let's stay focused on keeping our city diverse, inclusive, and
a place where all residents get a fair shot.
Sincerely,
Join us on Saturday, June 30 at RFK from
8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the 2018 Truck Touch! This annual event features
a variety of free activities for kids and adults. DC Government agencies will
present and demonstrate nearly 30 vehicles used to clean and repair
streets, change traffic lights, clear snow, provide emergency services, and
more.
This week’s District Minute

program, the 2018 Capital Pride Parade, and the Washington
Capitals' Stanley Cup Championship.
